Review

"Concise and persuasive...avoids most of the ideological shoals of the health care debate.... Cutler shows how the current system could be redesigned so that everyone is insured, the quality of care improves and the overall costs remain roughly the same."--Washington Post"This slender but important book...makes some exceedingly valuable points. Its passionate argument that modern medicine works is persuasive. It argues equally convincingly that there is both an economic and a moral case for medical spending. Perhaps most notable, it points out the manyperverse incentives in our current system of financing medical care, and it argues that we should correct the system by providing financial incentives for the medical treatments and the approaches we truly want. The book, in sum, represents a significant contribution to health-policy literature andideally, would be used to inform present and future discussions of health care in America."--St. Louis Post-Dispatch"It's also important for readers to understand the cost effectiveness behind developments in treating such conditions as cardiovascular disease, infant mortality and mental illness; chapters devoted to these are the best material in Cutler's book. His case studies are well researched and offera tremendous amount of information about medical history and its economic significance."--Los Angeles Times"When economics and medicine mix there is bound to be confusion unless someone like Harvard economics professor Cutler, who seems to effortlessly make a complex issue comprehensible, is doing the mixing.... An elegant investigation."--Booklist"Cutler has paved the way for a unique new understanding of health care in America: policy makers and providers should focus on increasing the value of dollars spent rather than rehashing the tired distinction between cutting costs and paying more. For everyone interested in improving healthcare in the United States, this is original and inspiring--actually, indispensable." --Bill Bradley"A thoughtful analysis of the problems afflicting our health care system. His creative proposals will interest every citizen concerned about improving American health care." --Edward M. Kennedy"This highly-readable volume explores all of the major issues that confront us as we attempt to improve America's health care system. David Cutler provides a clear and concise guide to how one should think about the costs and benefits of health care, the value of medical advances, and optionsfor reforming the health care system. This is the book to buy if you want to understand how we can improve health care in America." --Robert D. Reischauer, President, The Urban Institute"Cutler presents a refreshingly optimistic path for the future of America's health care system--promoting policies focused on increasing the value of medical services and improving health outcomes. He finds over and over that while health care expenditures are significant, we get a great dealmore in return. His work is a major contribution to what I believe will become an increasingly interesting and important debate--is more medical spending necessarily bad?" --Art Collins, Chairman and CEO, Medtronic, Inc."Flatly refutes the proposition that good economics has to be a difficult slog through arcane tables, charts, and mathematics. In 123 absorbing pages he shows readers why the gains from improved health care vastly exceed its formidable costs and how the gains could be larger still. In sodoing, he demonstrates that good economic analysis can contribute constructively to debate on public policy--and quote Euripides aptly at the same time!" --Henry J. Aaron, The Brookings Institution"Cutler's upbeat book delivers a welcome message to a public wearied by reports of medical errors, the rising number of uninsured, and the relentless growth in medical expenditures. Anyone with a serious interest in the U.S. health care system--and its future--should read this engaging andprovocative book by one of the most insightful health policy experts in the nation." --Alan Garber, Center for Health Policy, Stanford University

Well researched and well documented with over 25 pages of endnotes, this book is a hybrid: wonderfully readable yet academically sound. As a health economist and member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine, Cutler offers a scintillating, objective economic analysis of our existing health care system, exposing the embarrassing inadequacies and problems while also highlighting its successes. He also offers sage guidance for a better health care future: increasing the value of our health care system primarily by aligning incentives with desirable outcomes. Many but not all of his ideas are reflected in the Accountable Care Act. If every policy maker had read this book with an open mind, we would have been spared much of the political drama surrounding the enactment of the Affordable Care Act, as well as the post-enactment machinations to undo it. To pick nits, Cutler's view that just about everyone believes that everyone should have health insurance is not supported by the facts. If that were the case, we would have had comprehensive health reform many decades ago and few if any would be trying to repeal, nullify, or starve the Accountable Care Act. Also, his lumping regulation along with litigation as necessarily punitive suggests a rather limited view of regulation. Overall, though, this book is superb, a "must read" for everyone who cares about health care and the health of their fellow Americans.

since nothing is perfect.Authoritative, clearly written, and quite interesting; I recommend to anyone -- professionals, academics, laypersons -- interested in these issues.Specifics:1) The first 5 chapters convincingly argue that the enormous increases in health care spending are first attributable to new technology and treatments, and well justified, benefits substantially exceed the costs. The arguments are based in substantial part on Cutler's own academic research. By themselves, these chapters are sufficient to justify the book. Cutler does a good job of explaining both the technical economic concepts and the medical issues, and I suspect anyone interested in the topic will find the chapters fascinating, eye-opening.He reaches a very important conclusion: we ought to spend MORE, not less.2) Subsequent chapters survey sources of waste and problems of distribution. I found these helpful in outlining some important problems, and well worth reading, but incomplete (see below). In part these explore the incentives created by different systems of paying for health care; this helps explain why some sorts of technologies and procedures are favored over others in any particular case.3) The concluding chapter contains his solution to the problems, a system of universal insurance (mostly private) coverage, subsidized and supervised by the federal gov't; worth reading, but inadequate. Cutler focuses on a subset of problems & proposes a solution, with little consideration for other problems or possible solutions. For example, he ignores 'public choice' issues: how would his proposal work in a world of self-interested government official, bureaucrats, insurers, medical professionals, patients, etc.? The system he proposes might work on paper, but is quite susceptible to "gaming." USDA crop insurance is a real world example, and its poor performance should make us hesitant to expand this approach to health care.Similarly, Cutler argues that gov't and insurers should develop a payment system that rewards providers for measurable health improvements. Cutler greatly underestimates the difficulty. Soviet planners wrestled this problem for 75 years and were unable to solve it, how to specify a set of desired production outcomes from above and then have them realized as one envisions. It's a very difficult problem, I think unsolvable. Cutler underestimates it, and devotes essentially no attention to possible solutions which would make the individual consumer directly responsible for payment, and evaluation, of health care services.4) Cutler provides a lengthy set of citations from the scholarly literature, excellent for further study. He also features, on his website, a technical appendix. It's clear he's trying to spread light, not heat, in the health care debate. Good on him!5) Despite any weaknesses, Cutler does a fine job of framing the issues. The book is accessible and a good read. OK, OK, 4.9 stars.C.N. Steele Ph.D.

Good book.

The best book to assist me in understanding my Economy of Health Care course.

Second read on this. He advised Obama originally but was overridden by mre ideological advisors. Read and weap about what should have been

First, a disclaimer: Professor Cutler was on my dissertation committee, so I am certainly biased in his favor.Your Money or Your Life does an outstanding job of taking important work from the economics literature and translating it for the intelligent lay audience. I have found it a very useful text for various health economics courses from the firstyear undergraduate level to the masters level. The book has two main strengths: (1) it lays out, succinctly and readably, how economists think about the value of health care, and uses those tools to evaluate health care advances. The first half of the book does a wonderful job of reframing health care reform away from "how can we keep costs down?" and into "how can we get value for our money?" (2) it discusses, again succinctly and readably, the role that incentives play in delivering health care. Cutler argues strongly that we get what we pay for--that is, if we pay doctors more for intensive care, what we get is more intensive care, which isn't identical to higher quality care. The book's strengths are thus in framing the health care discussion. Some reviewers are criticizing the book for not dealing with various other crucial issues in health care. The book's goal is not to serve as a comprehensive textbook on health economics; such books exist, but this isn't one of them.Readers who disagree with the short section on proposed solutions would still, I think, benefit from Professor Cutler's excellent discussion of the problems.

Amazon.com Review

Robert Jordan has created a rich and intricate tapestry of characters in his Wheel of Time series. In this seventh volume, Rand al'Thor--the Dragon Reborn--draws ever closer to the Last Battle as a stifling heat grips the world.

From Publishers Weekly

The seventh volume of Jordan's bestselling high fantasy series carries on the tradition of colossal, dauntingly complex storytelling established by the previous entries (Lord of Chaos, 1994, etc.). In a richly woven post-holocaust world where magic is normally a woman's monopoly and a man who can use it is a menace, Rand al'Thor, a sheepherder, discovered that he could "channel"; he and his companions have gone on to set their world aflame. Here, Rand is engaged in a fight for control of the weather and of the growing number of men and women who have turned out to be magic-wielders. The narrative employs elements of realism rare in high fantasy, including the sense that innocent bystanders are being mauled in an epic joust of magical giants. There's wit at work here, too, in Jordan's exploration of the possibilities created by women being the magic workers. All this comes at the price of enough characters, institutions, spells, countries and so on to intimidate any reader who hasn't followed Rand's adventures from the beginning?and the author is still adding complications. A glossary helps, though, and fans of the series will gobble down this generous addition. Major ad/promo; deluxe leather-bound limited edition. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The Wheel of Time and I have an interesting relationship. Almost all of the characters totally infuriate me but I love the writing, cultures, world building and overall plots so even when in this book everything moves at a snail’s pace and almost nothing really happens plot wise I’m still thoroughly entertained and enjoy most of the story. But here is what I’ve learned during my time with the Wheel.❶ - The Wheel Weaves as the Wheel Wills. What does this mean exactly? Well it pretty much means that at any time anything can happen. Especially with Ta’veren about to increase the chances that the pattern will adjust to their needs at anytime.***“Untamed men are often the most interesting. To talk to.”A finger outlined his lips. “An untamed rogue who travels with Aes Sedai, a ta’veren who, I think, makes them a little afraid. Uneasy, at the least. It takes a man with a strong liver to make Aes Sedai uneasy. How will you bend the Pattern in Ebou Dar, just Mat Cauthon?”***❷ - There will be a prophecy or five and it will probably not go exactly how you think.***“The White Tower will be whole again, except for remnants cast out and scorned, whole and stronger than ever. Rand al’Thor will face the Amyrlin Seat and know her anger. The Black Tower will be rent in blood and fire, and sisters will walk its grounds. This I Foretell.”***Although most of this one could go like I think, the part about the Black Tower is still very up in the air.❸ - If you are from the Two Rivers then you are more likely to distrust the people you grew up with and completely trust someone who is most likely a darkfriend. Seriously this is that part that frustrates me the most. Rand, Mat and Perrin were best of friends growing up. Thick as thieves all of their lives. Now each is Ta’vern and has a specific part to play in the final battles to come and they are more likely to distrust each other than to try to help each other out. Actually often times when they do help each other it is by complete accident. And the women they grew up with Egwene and Nynaeve it is the same issue. You would almost think they were enemies the way they all treat one another instead of people who were close in a small village and grew up together. But throw a darkfriend or Forsaken in the midst of them and that is almost always the person they decide to trust with a ridiculous amount of information and power.❹ - If you can channel the one power then you lose some form of common sense. I seriously think that there is only a small section of Aes Sedai that I like. For the most part they seem far too arrogant and self-serving to actually get anything done. Even the ones I do/did like tend to go to extremes and I really want to smack them.***Mixing with Aes Sedai was too much like wading the streams in the Waterwood near to the Mire. However peaceful the surface, currents beneath could snatch you off your feet.***❺ - The details for the cultures and places is going to be fantastic and rich. You will definitely see not only the great differences but also the nuances between the Aiel, Domani, the Sea Folk and Seanchan. There are rich histories and reasons that each culture evolved as it did. This is really Jordan’s strong suit. He completely struggles a little with interpersonal relationships but the world building is impeccable.Even though this book barely moved any portion of the plot forward I still enjoyed most of it. There were a lot of great parts and fantastic characters. I did have a huge problem with one section thought and I’m totally going to go off on it for a second. As I said before, Jordan struggles with interpersonal relationships. Often for our main characters the jump from just meeting to being in love is really short and has very little page time dedicated to the buildup of an actual relationship. But in this book he really missed his mark with the character development he was trying to give Mat.What I believe Jordan was trying to do. Mat is a bit of a skirt chaser but we always get the sense that the skirts want to be chased and everyone is having a good time. But when Jordan tried to turn the tables on Mat and have a woman in power go after his attentions it is supposed to come off as a little funny and haha Mat how does it feel to have the tables turned. This is needed to set him up to be more receptive to the Daughter of the Nine Moons who he was prophesized to marry eventually. It was supposed to be cute and maybe a little funny What actually happened or at least how I saw it was totally and completely rape. Look I get that isn’t what he really wanted to come across but that is totally how I saw it. The Queen Tylin takes a liking to Mat and decides he is going to be her lover. She tries to get him alone, she limits what the kitchens will give him as food, she ambushes him in his rooms and when he tries to turn he down and move her away setting his hands on her she pulls her knife and there is a fade to black scene. The next day Mat is ashamed, wants to cry and doesn’t want anyone else to know. There is no mention that he loved it and wants to be with her. He acts like he was a victim and tries to avoid her at all costs. It was very poorly portrayed and if it was the man on the other end it would definitely totally be rape without question. If I didn’t think that it was totally not his intention to portray it in a comical sense I might have given up right there. Especially after how Elayne and Nynaeve treat the situation. But I’ll give Jordan a pass since all of the romantic entanglements have been handled almost as equally poorly.Best New Friendship Award - Goes to Mat and Birgetta. I love those two on page together. I’m glad Mat has one woman in his life that he likes to hang out with and isn’t interested in kissing.Non-Evil Character I want to push off a Cliff - This still goes to Elayne. The haughty daughter heir still drives me a bit crazy. She is a bit better with Avienda around to teach her Toh but I still don’t like her.OverallI’m still in it to win it and I was warned there would be a few slower books so I am prepared for them. Even though my review is a bit critical I really do like most of the characters when they are not being stupid to one another and like the intensity of the bad guys and the overall march to kill the dark one eventually. The Cultures, Magic and Mayhem make this series.

I very much enjoy serial stories. This one is mammoth! I think the author has moved a little slowly, but mostly, the reason I like it vs. loving it, is that I think he's been a little sloppy with the female characters. The story definitely wraps around the female characters; their persistence at not learning from their mistakes, their haughty and self-absorbed characters, and their very high self-beliefs make them tiring to read about. The central male characters aren't much better either. The author manages to introduce a new obstacle, or new magic, or new opponent in every book. The story is very well thought out and very well devised. I'm enjoying that aspect very much. I just hope his character development improves, cause it's a long road to go without that. It's almost like the focus is on the story with limited attention paid to character development. So. Having said all that, I'm still hooked and have gone on to the 8th book, which is really the 9th book because there was a prequel written that is numbered "0".

I'm sure Robert Jordan wasn't trying to be misogynistic when he wrote the Wheel of Time series. Indeed, he probably thought he was very forward thinking - after all, there are as many important female characters as there are males. But book 7 is a prime example of just how painful his character writing was.All of the women are very similar (because he based all the female characters on his wife), and all the male characters are also very similar (because he based them all on himself). This is true throughout the series, but it's especially noticeable in this volume. The women all feel that all men are idiots and need to be led by the nose for their own good. The men all feel that all women are manipulative and scheming (and they all are). None of the women knows how to show a modicum of respect to anybody. Attempts at respect come out as simpering and sniveling. And let's not forget that this book plays RAPE off for a laugh. Matrim Cauthin is being bedded against his will by the queen of Ebou Dar, and when he finally finds the courage to tell Elayne about it, she LAUGHS AT HIM, and says it's a taste of his own medicine (oh really? you think he's a rapist too?). Mat also spends the whole act complaining about how "This is a girl's place, not a man's" - because apparently being raped every night is only for "girls". The whole subplot is DISGUSTING and was not handled with the care and sensitivity that it should have been.I am still forcing myself to read the whole series because the world building is excellent, and the story is interesting. I just hate 99% of the characters, and spend most of my time yelling at them as I read (or listen to the audiobook). Most of Jordan's characters are pretty horrible people, with few redeeming factors (if any).

I loved this book! There has never been a more complete book written on this subject i have read. It will teach you about gear, music, techniques, business advice, and the industry as a whole. If you have never touched DJ gear, you will learn everything you need to start doing gigs. If you have DJ'd for a while like I have, you will pick up great tips to rejuvenate your love of it. Really fun read!

I started deejaying back in 2017 through private lessons. Unfortunately, due to relocating internationally and not having the proper equipment or connections like I had when I first started, I was a bit lost on how to get back started. I follow Digital DJ Tips on social media and saw the promotions. I decided to give it a try. This book reminded me of a lot of the basics that I honestly forgot over time as well as introducing me to a lot of good info that I never considered. It also pointed out many things that I had been doing right up until that point. The language in the book was very down to earth and easy to understand (I did spot one grammatical error or typo. I'm a former ESL teacher so I notice these things but it didn't take away from the overall message :) ) I used it to pass time at work a lot. I definitely recommend it to any aspiring DJs or DJs who (like me) are trying to get back into the game.

This book is excellent, like most everything Phil produces. It is great overview of all things DJ for beginnings, but even experienced pros like me will get great ideas or have blanks filled in as well. Highly recommended to any current or aspiring DJs.

I started DJing in 2010. I literally saw a cool DJ video on YouTube and decided it would fun. The next day I found myself at a music store and after 3 hours purchased a controller (outside of my budget and not what I needed in the least). I had to figure out everything - where to get music; how to organize it; how to hook up everything; how to get gigs. There was so much trial and error. This book really compresses years worth of experience into an easy to digest format. I really wish this was available when I started.

For someone who is new to DJing and wants to get an excellent overview of the basics, this is a great book. I have gone on to Phil's other more advanced video and written guides which are also excellent but this lays down those very important first things to think about.

I have been using digital Dj tips for over a year now and love all the training and tips. I would recommend them to anyone serious about being a better than average Dj.

Even just in the first chapter I am learning so many useful tips. I can't wait to get into the rest of it! Great models and recommendations. It is just so nice to have all of this wonderful information offline and all in one plalce. Lots of great tips to ensure you are on the right track in your DJ journey!

It Rocks. A good book for prospective DJ's

From School Library Journal

Gr 3 Up—Spinning off of the popularity of maker spaces and capitalizing on the call for STEM-based products, this title offers a plethora of engaging projects that will capture the attention and curiosity of students from lower elementary (with guidance) through high school. Divided into four categories, "Food for Thought," "Around the Home," "Water World," and "The Great Outdoors," the projects are accompanied by clear directions, attractive photos, and the scientific principles behind each topic. The colorful, well-staged photos focus on the ingredients and steps involved in each project and are relatively timeless-looking—no trendy clothes to age the book later on and no photos of very young participants to turn off older readers. Some tasks, such as Sticky Slime, are familiar but still serve well as fun and educational learning experiences. Others, like Baked Alaska and sugar crystal lollipops, require a full kitchen, or a very strong Bunsen burner at least. Other projects, such as the DNA Model and Sensational Speakers, will appeal to older readers. With projects such as Bath Fizzies and Icy Orbs, this selection has something for everyone. VERDICT Public and school libraries should consider this volume for inventive students and quick event ideas.—Sarah Knutson, American Canyon Middle School, CA

#11,682 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Let me preface this review by saying that I am a science teacher. I have flipped through so many books with science activities and projects, and after a while they all start to look the same. Not so with this one. Sure there are some of the same timeless ideas (volcano? check!) but the presentation is great. And there are some ideas I haven't seen before (making your own bath bombs?) The book is lovely to look at, with some great accessible material for kids of all ages. I plan to do most of these with my 4 year old, but teenagers would have a lot of fun with this as well.

While it looks beautiful, there are hardly any interesting experiments. I think there are only 2 that I bookmarked to try. I expected more creative and interesting ideas from the smithsonian. Perhaps next time worry less about beautiful photography and more about the content.

This book is so cute and I coupled it with an idea I piggy backed from a celebrity to make a unique gift. I purchased two cloth sacks and bought the ingredients for two of the experiments and separated them in the bags and also put the name of the experiment on the bag and the page number. Such a cool idea because once they get the whole present they are ready to go for at least two. I also chose two of them that had an ingredient which you could find in some of the others like wood skewers, rubber bands, glue, etc.

Exactly as described! I bought this after seeing Kendall Jenner’s gift to her niece and I just loved the idea! I bought this book in order to replicate Kendall’s idea and while I love it and again, everything was as described, I’m slightly disappointed in the book itself, hence the 4 stars, only because I wasn’t thrilled with the experiments offered. For the price I paid though, I can’t complain too much. Target and Toys R Us sell this book for double the price of Amazon, so overall, I’m happy with the purchase and I do recommend it!

If I could get a by the case discount, I would. I bought these for every birthday my child got invited to this year. He's 6 and this book is amazing. I bought it for him originally and have bought 7 more since. Very interactive. Great learning tool while being fun. These ideas can be found elsewhere but were put together well with bright pictures in a good collection. Highly recommend.

We bought this book for our niece who loves everything science. She loves it! It is such a great book. It has a lot of projects you can do with household items most people will have already. The instructions are so easy to understand and there are pictures for everything! This is a great book to have around for snow days and weekends!

I originally checked this book out from the library for my 8 year old, and then had to go ahead and buy it for her after renewing it twice because she did not want to return it. It has lots of fun projects for kids and great pictures showing how to complete them, along with some child-accessible science about what is happening. There's also at least a few you will most likely have supplies on hand to do, so not everything has to be a run to the store just to try out one or two projects. Overall a really fun book for the budding scientist and curious child.

Bought as a gift for a 7 year-old. She loved it and immediately went through the book to bookmark experiments to try. Paired it with a disposable child-sized lab coat and goggles and it was a hit!
