This was a surprising and unfaithful look into a post-apocalyptic America. There were no zombies or virus induced mutations. It was just a realistic portrayal of what society would, in all probability turn into with no laws or enforcement.

A pair of novels that were dark and frightening and uplifting and full of hope.Butler tells a story set in the near future. This is a future which has (fortunately for those of us who would have to live in it) not yet come to pass. It is a future which easily could come to pass just as Butler has predicted. As always, her characters were strong yet vulnerable. The backdrop is a realistic world with more problems than solutions.I cannot express how much I enjoyed this book. The story moved at the right pace throughout. The second book is told through a series of flashbacks and journal excerpts of the main characters each of which moves the story forward.All in all, maybe it is too soon to process exactly what I liked so much, but I can emphatically and unreservedly recommend this series.

I loved this series and find it particularly relevant in today political atmosphere. We have a racist president, the religious right would like to limit women's equality and the environment is being neglected. I wish everyone could read this series.

These two Earthseed books have been my introduction to Octavia Butler's work, and a wonderful one. Harrowing and humane, a mostly ground-level view of a terrifyingly plausible near-future, the story of Lauren Olamina feels entirely real. Recommended, especially if you've had enough space opera and would like to read something written for -- and by -- a grown-up.

As I was reading The Parable of the Sower, I had to stop and look up when this book was written. I thought that perhaps Octavia Butler had written it in response to Trump, Pence, and Bannon, but it turns out she died well before they came into the political spotlight. I typically read fiction to briefly escape from reality, but reading a dystopian novel while feeling vaguely like I could be living through the beginning of a dystopian novel really does nothing to relieve my anxiety.That aside, I thought the idea of Earthseed was interesting. I wanted to find out what happened to Lauren and whether she survived.I wish greater care had been taken in the editing of the book. Perhaps it was just the Kindle version I was reading, I found the amount of typos distracting.

Octavia E. Butler is an amazing author and I thoroughly enjoyed reading Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents. Both books are wonderfully written and very entertaining to read. 5 stars!

Whoa, this really is well written, shocks your thinking and makes you question your assumptions about race, control, biological drive among others. I have read a lot of fiction, sci fiction with new ideas but I really appreciate how Octavia Butler can present but subtle and blunt in the same breath. If none of this book makes you uncomfortable or question what you believe, you are a rare bird. This book somehow manages to present topics which are boldly uncomfortable in a way that seems casual and honest.

Octavia Butler did good. This is speculative dystopia, and if you see when it was written, late 80's, the possibility that our cities and social systems would fall apart in this way would make sense. This is a warning from that time which maybe did some good and which is still relevant in many countries around the world. But: read it for the fun and for the characters. Butler does not pull punches about the dark side of life, but her hope makes me hope. She will not make this or any book into something too inaccessible or intellectual, but she was smart as can be and creative. It will make you think. When you do, you will see that she used simple language on purpose, because she was a genius who can touch your heart without flash.

It's very rare that I come across a book that I consider invaluable, but Kapuscinski's slim valedictory volume is one such work.At its heart, the book -- a collection of speeches and articles published posthumously -- deals with the apparently incurable and universal human tendency to treat some of their fellow humans as less than human -- as "other". That tendency is what makes possible genocide, racism, discrimination, and many of the other intractable problems that loom ever-larger as the world becomes more globalized and we are forced to deal with groups we consider 'other' more frequently than ever before. Some of the questions associated with 'otherness' are at the core of global conflicts: how can we, for instance, reclaim our heritage and take pride in it without rejecting anyone who does not share that heritage as "other" and not deserving of respect?A real interest in travel -- as opposed to sightseeing -- and deep curiosity about the world are as rare today as in the days of Herodotus, millennia ago, Kapuscinski argues. Thankfully, he was not only a wonderful writer but an active and observant traveler, drawing on the observations of anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski (who noted that whites who lived on the Trobriand Islands had a completely misleading understanding of the local islanders because they lived parallel lives that never overlapped; Malinowski lived in the center of a local village.) Kapuscinski's his analysis of his personal other -- someone non-white, with a strong national or tribal identity and a strong religious identity (what he replies when he is asked whether he believes in God, he writes "will have immense influence on everything that happens thereafter" in his relationship with his questioner) is particularly compelling. But he further still, pondering how that other perceives him -- because to that individual, Kapuscinski himself is the "other".For all the philosophical ruminations that are implied in the issues that Kapuscinski addresses, this book is written is such a simple, straightforward and powerful way that it is accessible to anyone. At its core, he argues, there is a broad human family to which we all belong. Increasingly, we are going to become aware of that reality, in response to mass migration and emigration into countries that have until now remained relatively isolated on an ethnic basis. He may be an idealist, of course. "We are entering... the Planet of Opportunity," he argues, a world in which history may not be destiny. In a cry from the heart, he concludes by arguing that only generosity of spirit is the right way to transform the "other" into the familiar -- and "touch a chord of humanity in him."This work is a sad reminder of what we have lost with the death of Ryszard Kapuscinski, a great humanist in the true meaning of that word. For those not familiar with his books, I'd urge you to accompany reading this work with his final opus, a quasi memoir, Travels with Herodotus (Vintage International) or one of his books about Africa, where many of the ideas in this book first took root, such as The Shadow of the Sun

Everyone should read this book. In fact I am just now kicking myself because I didn't think to use it in the anthro class I taught.

Too ambitious a topic for the great Kapuscinski to handle. The content is repetitive and lacks depth. None the less, the topic of the book itself is a provocation to treat "The Other" with respect, curiosity and openness. And that's not a bad thing at all.

"The Other," a book published posthumously in 2008, is such a powerful tribute and respectful salute to a man who speaks almost poetically toward people he moved amongst for over half of his career--people he poignantly called the Other.What constitutes the Other? First, what does not? If you spoke English or any other European language as a native language in the 1800s, you most likely were white and of the West. Everyone else was the Other. Two things in his life made him very aware of his initial viewpoint: his reading of Herodotus and his own book, "Travels with Herodotus (Vintage International), translated into English in 2007, and his choice to live in and report the events of the Global South: Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In fact, Kapuscinski reports, "80% of the world is non-white" (56).His own thoughts reflect those of his favorite philosophers, who were dialogists: Emmanuel Levinas and Josef Tischner. Here is a simple summary of the three reactions to Others: start war with them, isolate your culture from them, or begin a dialogue. One expanded version was to consider the Other as God in the form of a visitor. How would you treat him? This is the culture of Hospitality as a form of dialogue.Kapuscinski's most admired anthropologist was Bronislaw Malinowski, who did not just study a group of people: he lived among them, often at great personal sacrifice and anguish. But it was Malinowski who showed that living as the Other himself was much more conducive to creating an open environment. Short of living in another culture to learn to understand it,one can travel (a short shrift but an effort) and by reading works of writers of other cultures.This little book (92 pages, plus Index) seemed repetitive and disjointed at times during my reading. However, the four lectures that comprise it were delivered over a period of five years in Vienna and Krakow. It was on the second reading that things came together for me. As a result, I highly recommend this book if you are interested in furthering a Global Village.Kapuscinski's poem? The translators say that he could write about those things, then with a keystroke, delete them. That governments can "delete" whole villages, whole cultures with a bomb. What about attitudes? If we continue to treat people as Others, as inferiors, are we mentally "deleting?" Perhaps that is why the world is joyfully embracing President-Elect Barack Obama. The Other is Us.

Most of the information in this book is common sense. It is a collection of lead paragraphs taken from hacking stories over the past few years. There were no details about how hacking is done or how to prevent it. Save your money. Buy something else.

Disappointed by the lack of content. I purchased this book after reading other reviews and expected some examples to work through, managed to read the book in about half an hour and the content was very high level and not particularly useful.

I read all three books in the series to date, back-to-back, in order, in a week.What I liked/didn't quite like:1. Adam, a teacher, and Robin, a police inspector -- truly enjoyed these two MCs who clearly belong together. The scenes of domesticity were some of my favorites.2. It's very British, to such an extent that some of the slang was new to me. Unfortunately, it continuously pulled me from the story, and, even worse, I didn't care enough to Google (and I normally would).3. Sex scenes - none; although the chemistry is there, these scenes don't take place within the books. I definitely prefer more graphic love scenes, but I occasionally enjoy a change and these books did that well.4. Mystery plot -- I feel the mystery in each was solid, but I'm conflicted with this. I always prefer longer books and these are perfect in that way. But it was in a lot of the police procedural scenes where I lost patience with the British English and skimmed through pages missing details which made the resolutions of each less satisfying to me. Would shorter length have been better? I don't know; I may not have read them.5. Campbell -- love this dog!💗💗💗 Clearly the MCs do, too. The realities of life with a dog were awesome and made me love Adam and Robin even more! The other secondary characters (people) were cool, too.Will I read the next in the series? Absolutely.

This is the third in a series of British Mysteries where the main characters happen to be gay, yet the mystery is the true focus of the story. I enjoyed this book and the previous tales, because of the authenticity of the characters and the attention to details that the author presents. Additionally, the author has written for a British audience, often I had to look up words for meanings or context, and in my opinion this only added to my enjoyment. Again this is a mystery with gay characters, not a gay m/m romance mystery, filled with detailed sexual adventures, it is a great change of pace. I hope that the adventures of Chief Inspector Bright and Head Teacher continue for at least another 3 novels.

I have to say I was pretty mad when I first found the book was only available in print, but looking tonight they had the Kindle edition. I have enjoyed every book in this series. I love Adam and Robin's relationship, I like trying to solve the mystery. Can't wait for the next book, and I wouldn't mind another book The Lessons series.

The author does a wonderful job in every area and the entire series was riveting. The background setting, the language, the characters and the plot were all great. I'll definitely come back to read these many times.

I’m doing real well this week on the mystery front, as Cochrane‘s newest addition to the Lindenshaw Mysteries series knocks it right out the park. I’ve yet to grow tired of Robin and Adam’s ridiculously sweet relationship, or the many-twisted mysteries that surround them. Focusing more on Robin this time around, this book gives us a closer look at his job as a Chief Inspector, as he struggles to solve the case of a dead woman dug up at a local archeological dig. He is not helped by the fact that they can’t seem to even pin a name on the victim–let alone the killer(s?). Add to that a new job with less than helpful coworkers who seem more intent on seeing him go down in flames, than finding a killer.I really liked that this book changed things up a bit with the characters–and in a way that didn’t require the couple to have a completely stupid fight so the book could be all about Robin and Adam getting back together (by far my biggest pet peeve about series centered around a single couple). Having Robin and Adam change jobs (or at least job locations) gave them both new people to interact with, as well as giving the book an air of uncertainty. Was sad to see that Robin and Anderson had to split up (professionally) since Robin got moved to a new precinct (or whatever the English equivalent is), but since Anderson basically spends the book sharing space with Robin and Adam, I didn’t feel the loss too badly.The new cast of characters–both those I assume will stay around for a bit, and the tertiary characters needed for this plot alone–were just great. Pru and Ben–officers working under Robin at his new position–were good sounding boards for Robin. I really hope they come into play in later books because I really enjoyed them.And all the various suspects and witnesses that were involved in the mystery aspect of the plot were what really made this book. While I still think book one was my favorite story overall, this one has my favorite mystery. You could never know what was really going on with everyone involved in this case, and I could never really predict where the story was going. And I was really glad that this story did not involve a certain event near the end that would have made me roll my eyes a bit at the predictability.This was just on the whole an entirely enjoyable story. The chemistry between Robin and Adam is a bit low-key, but it is still very real. They are comfortable in their relationship, and while there are bumps in the road, they are nothing that doesn’t happen in real-life couples. And the fade-to-black aspect (or the fact that the book is set up to keep them temporarily c*ck-blocked by Anderson) might bug others, but it is probably one of the big sells for me. These books tend to focus on the mystery more than the relationships, anyways, and so it wasn’t anything I went in expecting to find. I do like the ingenious way the plot contrived to keep them apart though. I thought Adam’s reaction to not wanting to have sex with Anderson in the house to be rather adorable, and completely in character.What else can I say? I loved it, and can’t wait till we can get a fourth story in the series.

These CDs were very helpful to someone who is completely new in Spanish. I listen to these CDs on my dreaded commute to and from work.I don't agree with the previous reviewer because this is NOT a Spanish course for travelers, but a Spanish course for you to learn the language overall. The first CD goes through vocabulary and grammar pretty slowly. It starts picking up the second and third. I am still trying to figure some stuff they are saying on the third CD. They don't break down the vocabulary and so into complete sentences, speaking very fast.Personally, it is very hard for me to learn things only by listening. I supplement this with things on the web. Of course, if you're learning Spanish, conjugations are a must so of course I practice that on my own time.If you're completely new to Spanish and want to really learn it (not just for traveling), then start with this first. I think it gives you a good grip on the basics. Again, I cannot solely learn Spanish with these CDs, but it was a good introduction.

I never took Spanish in school, but with another trip to a Spanish-speaking country coming up, thought I'd get in a bit of language review while commuting in the car. This 3-disc program did not answer the call. The first hour was mostly filled up with learning such useful phrases as "my uncle has three nephews." "There are seven children in my family, and I have four sisters and two brothers." "My mother has a kitchen." (really). There was hardly a useful phrase to be found - at least in the first hour, and by then I'd lost interest waiting for something I could use. The teaching approach wasn't too bad, but an overabundance of things I could not possibly care less about (I do not have a large familia and wouldn't be telling people about it if I did) combined with a near-total lack of useful information led me to drop the program before getting to discs two and three. Most other similar programs are bound to be more relevant to adults.
