This is not your typical "children's" book. Full color pages beautifully illustrate the story of Titanic with each page featuring A-Z facts about history's most haunting ship. There are detailed facts outlined beneath each letter of the alphabet, bringing to light many facts that were not commonly known, especially by children. Here is a sampling of what you will find:A is for Anatomy of the Titanic (further insight details the size, levels, decks, etc.)B is for BridgeC is for Children (further details on first, second and third class passengers.L is for LifeboatsM is for MarconiR is for Rescue (with in depth details of the Carpathia coming to the aid of the TitanicS is for Captain Smith....and the facts go on in such a way that the story is really told from beginning to end. Children of all ages will understand the pictures and older children will be intrigued not only by the illustrations, but also by the events of April 14th, 1912 told in a straightforward, informational yet compassionate way. As a lifelong Titanic buff, I was eager to share this book with my children, who also have developed a natural fascination with the story. I highly recommend this book be placed in classroom libraries for group discussions.
Simple rhyming verse concerning the Titanic for young children with more advanced information on the same page for older readers. Lots of information that possibly we already knew plus some very interesting tidbits I didn't know. I'm an adult, but I still found pleasure reading this book and enjoying the artwork.
This is a wonderful book for any Titanic lover. The pictures are very vivid and take up the whole page. The descriptions for each letter are pretty interesting. My five year old is fascinated with Titanic and we have been to Titan museums and still held interest in the book. He likes this book alot. I must admit I have to shorten the paragraph down for each alphabet letter sometimes because he is so young but I would recommend this book. I purchased the book from Amazon and it arrived quickly and it was less expensive than the cover price but it is worth the full price too.
If your child is interested in the Titanic--this book is perfect... It has short simple sentences on each page for each letter for young kids and then a big paragraph with more info for older kids--so it can be enjoyed for years...It was bought for a 4 yr old and he just loves this book..constantly looking at the pics and asking a zillion questions..
My son loves this book so if the interest is there get it! He started reading this in 2nd grade.
I was just reading this to my 5 year old Granddaughter before bed as she chose it at the library. When I got to C; is for children, with all their dreams of a new home in America, then D is for dogs, who are all dead too. F is for first class. K is for Kodak camera.. I think you get where I'm going with this. I had to stop reading after N is for Navratil, the father that, under false pretenses, took 2 boys aboard. They lived and authorities had hard time finding the mother because of the false names. That brought their mother tears of joy. Really? Just absolutely awful. I'm not an alarmist, but I found this book disturbing at best.
Several weeks ago, my wife read Titanicat (True Stories) to our 4-year-old granddaughter and she was fascinated by the story and the pictures. So, when this book, T is for Titanic: A Titanic Alphabet (Sleeping Bear Alphabets), was offered to us by Amazon Vine, I immediately grabbed it.I read it to the little girl two days ago and I have to tell you - she seemed to be even more fascinated with this one than the previous one. Of course that may be because she now had certain knowledge which influenced her; she had enjoyed the first book so why not this one too? (I am too far away from a 4-year-old mind to know just what goes through them!)The book is arranged in alphabetical order with each letter representing something about the Titanic (some of them, however, seem a bit far-fetched, though this is not objectionable). Each letter has a short poem and a paragraph or two of explanation. I read the poems to her and I merely paraphrased the explanatory material in a way she could (hopefully) understand.I have only one quibble with one of the poems: it seems to me that, in the poem, the watertight doors would seem to prevent the ship from sinking. Obviously they didn't work and I had to explain that to her. But the other poems appear to stand fairly well on their own. (The poem about the little French boys required some additional explanation too.)The pictures are beautiful as is the paper, the printing, and the binding. I am sure that either my wife or I will re-read this book to her many times in the future and I'll bet that, when she herself learns to read, she'll come back to it too. Someone wrote, in another review, that the reviewer feels that the sewn binding will not hold up. I can tell you that I have such a book (printed and bound in exactly the same way, though with an inferior paper stock) and it is well over 60 years old. It has held up perfectly and I see no reason that this one, if given reasonable care, should not do so too. After I finished reading the book to her, I asked my granddaughter if she would like to see a movie about the Titanic some day; she responded with an enthusiastic "yes!" So, one of these days, I plan to show her "A Night to Remember," the best (in my opinion) movie about the Titanic and its sinking. But I think we'll wait a bit; that movie (and all Titanic films) may be a bit intense for a 4-year-old. We'll have to see.It is obvious to my wife and me that these two books have certainly whetted our granddaughter's curiosity about this historical event. (I am not THAT far away to know that small children are truly hungry for knowledge!)I highly recommend this book to anyone with a small child; I recommend the "Titanicat" book too.
