The book is easy reading, very nice wording, the author wrote in plain Spanish. I did not like the part when she is talking about his family, and she presents herself like she is not from the Dominican Republic, like all those years outside make her surprise of everything that she sees in DR or Haiti. She is Dominican, why so much surprising!!!! Plus she born in a town, not even in a city. Anyway, the book is good reading.!!!

Rating:4 1/2 of 5 stars (excellent)Review:Having seen Walter Payton play football in his prime and admiring what he did on the field, I was interested in reading this biography written by a well-known and respected writer for Sports Illustrated. It turns out there was a lot more to the man than the image that was portrayed as the hard-working football player and dedicated Christian and family man.The research and detail in this book was very good. Pearlman talked to many of Payton's teammates in high school and college. The section on Payton's time at Jackson State was quite impressive in its detail - such as the details of some of the practices endured by the players. When he turns pro with the Chicago Bears, the ups and downs of not only Payton but the entire team is well researched as well. The reader learns why Payton struggled at times because the Bears team was not very good.What makes the book even better, however, is Pearlman's account of Payton's life off the field, both during his youth and his adulthood. Very often biographies of professional athletes will reveal unknown characteristics about the athlete that most fans did not know existed. This is no exception. The best way to describe this aspect of the book is conflicting. Payton is trying to live the proper Christian life, but has many sessions of infidelity, including fathering a child with someone other than his wife. He is at times portrayed as an egomaniac, but yet will always visit sick children in hospitals when called upon. He is often portrayed as a great team player, yet is shown to be sulking about individual slights, whether real or perceived. The best story of that was during Super Bowl XX, when he was livid that William "Refrigerator" Perry, a defensive lineman, was given the ball to score the last touchdown of that game instead of him.This is a well researched, well written biography of the running back who many believe to be the greatest to ever play in the NFL.Did I skim?No.Did I learn something new?Yes. The most interesting (or shocking, depending on your viewpoint) was the revelation of Payton's infidelity and hard-partying lifestyle well after his playing days were over. It is not all that shocking when any athlete lives like that while playing and especially when on the road, but that Payton did this while being portrayed as an ideal family man was quite eye-opening.Pace of the book:Excellent. The transitions between football and off-the-field portions were smooth and the book was told in chronological order.Positives:The research and detail are the outstanding aspects of this book, but in addition, I believed the manner in which Pearlman presented topics that could be controversial or troubling, such as Payton's cheating, the way in which he treated his assistants, or his drug and alcohol use, was done with sensitivity and in a non-judgmental manner.Negatives:There weren't any glaring negatives about the book. The closest I could come to one was that at times, the reader could believe that the author is bashing Payton too much on his lifestyle choices, especially concerning the lack of time he spent with his son born out of wedlock. However, once the reader finishes the book and everything is covered, this turns out to be simply another chapter in a complicated life of a complicated man.Do I recommend?Yes, for any football fan or reader who enjoys biographies.

Here in Chicago this book has taken quite a beating over the years since its publication. How dare anyone question the divinity that was / is Walter Payton? I can only imagine the hostility that will greet the first in-depth biography of Mike Ditka...And Payton really was something of a deity on the field - no denying. As football heroes go, he was about as football-heroish as you can get around here (or much of anyplace else, I suppose). A lot of fans reverently mumble a "hallowed be thy name" and that's that. But that also does a disservice, in many ways, to the real man who lived inside that hero. And Payton was a real man.To present the man in his complexity, with his not-always admirable behavior, is a service to life in general. One doesn't want to make too much of a person who's claim to fame is the ability to play a sport very, very well, but if you DO want to look at a man or woman who excelled at such things, then really look at them. And this book does.The Payton who emerges here is no less remarkable as an athlete, and his shortcomings and foibles do not render him any less admirable in his strengths and positives. This is an absorbing read about an interesting, flawed man. For those interested in his life and career, it provides three dimensions, not just the two you saw on the field. And part of that third dimension was pretty admirable, too; just not all of it.

Author Jeff Pearlman has written an all-encompassing biography of Chicago Bears' superstar Walter Payton. While I am not a big football fan I do enjoy reading biographies of sports' standouts, and Walter Payton certainly fits that category. The author includes both the good and the bad in his life which makes Walter Payton human like the rest of us. We may say that he lived a life of contradictions. He had time for kids with autograph requests and visitation, yet wanted nothing to do with his son born out of wedlock. He emphasized the team's interests, but felt he lacked the recognition of other running backs. To achieve the all-time rushing record became important to him, yet his wife was often neglected.Walter Payton suffered through that period that several others go through following retirement in regard to what to do with his life. It proved to be a drastic change to him, and he had difficulty finding happiness. We often think of celebrities having the best things that life has to offer, but in Walter Payton's case as in several others, they are beset with problems and difficulties that we know nothing about.Some reviewers have criticized this book because it appears to denigrate Walter Payton. While Walter had several faults that many of us are spared, it isn't our place to condemn him. I found the book to be an interesting read on a complex individual who brought joy to those who watched this gifted athlete in action. The subtitle "The Enigmatic Life of Walter Payton" is entirely appropriate. Although I'm not a particular fan of football I certainly was aware of Walter Payton, and found the book to be an enriching read.

....about one of the kindest and as the book title says, enigmatic, Walter Payton. A true role model for people of all ages. He was my heroe and will always be my heroe, even in death. This book was written in a strange way but when it comes right down to it, there was no other way to write it....as it was finished just before he passed away. My hats off to a man with such grace, even in death. One of the best reads I have ever done.

I bought this book for the Green Marketing class my professor started! If you want to know how to help our planet this is the book you need. I am using it to pieces literally. I'm going to have to order another book lol. It really is an easy read and at $16 it's a steal!!!

I bought the book after reading the excellent reviews written about the book. I have to say Ottman is great in marketing the book and her name. The book is easy to read as it is written in a language as if she is giving a presentation, so yes very easy to follow. But I found the book having a few main messages presented in 10 different ways. At a certain point you also get tired of - the 10 rules of this and the seven rules of that and the 11 rules of the other. As all the sets of rules have the same messages. All case studies which are probably 60% of the content of the book are mainly US, so difficult to relate to Europeans let alone other audience. I would have much preferred that Ottman takes a broader perspective and looks at not only green issues but sustainable marketing. All in all I would say as add up to the New rules of green marketing: green marketing out, sustainable marketing in.

Good resource for those looking to learn how to market using green marketing without watering down their ideas. My instructor personally knew the author, and I think this helped understand why the author wrote what she wrote even if I did not agree with what she was saying.

When I did an abrupt life and career change last year and decided to start Hipcycle, a green online e-commerce business, I read a bunch of new books about social media, new biz start up, environmental issues and the like, and this book really resonated with me because my mind was going in the direction of the tenets described in this book, but it helped me synthesize it much more coherently.So, in a sense, this book has played a major role in the development of an entire company!

I purchased the Leader Guide listed here (October 2015 is the advertised publishing date) for additional ideas in facilitating the small group meetings. My Sunday school class is doing this study for the next 7 weeks using The Search for Significance Workbook (a 7 session study). Unfortunately, this "Leader Guide" has material for 11 lesson plans, referencing videos that do not exist any longer, and referencing material that is not included in the workbook at all.The "Leader Guide" is suspicious in its appearance, as well. The image is a grainy, enlarged image of the cover from the workbook. The binding color does not match the color palette of the rest of the official materials. The back cover is also grainy in appearance, as if it has been copied and enlarged. On the inside back cover, the final page says it was printed the day I ordered it, locally- here in my city. The back cover shows the image of the logo indicating it is a product of The Official McGee Publishing Company, but a look at the website of Robert S. McGee's site reveals that this is not, in fact, a current publication.Please be aware when purchasing this item. With the exception of the "Trip In" handout pages, there is no material in this "Leader Guide" that correlates with the current edition of the workbook (as of August 2018). Everything included in this guide is from material that must have been retired. The product information should reflect this. Stick with the leader outlines in the back of the workbook itself.Now, the material of the Search for Significance Workbook- PHENOMENAL, life changing. But, that is a different item from the one I am reviewing. I hope this can help someone avoid my mistake in purchasing this guide!

This book was foundational to understanding my identity in Christ, and breaking free from the bondage of looking to anyone or anything other than Christ for my self-worth. His one statement alone regarding the "world's equation of self-worth" = performance + other's opinions (a trap I had lived in for years!) vs. the truth that "our self-worth" = God's Truth about us, was bondage breaking and life altering. He elaborates thoroughly on all those truths that will set you free to base your self-worth on the love, forgiveness and acceptance of Christ! I love how the book also contains self-tests, so you can see where you need mind-renewal to God's truths. This is a DEFINITE 5 star. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

When I expressed my enthusiasm over Search for Significance by Robert S. McGee, a friend wondered why such an elementary topic was so important. After all, by this time I should know my value in the Lord. Well, I did and I do. Nevertheless, this book greatly enhanced my understanding and established a new level of freedom.McGee identifies four specific mindsets that keep people from knowing they are valuable to God, to themselves, and to other people: The Performance Trap deals with feeling a need to meet "certain standards" to experience fulfillment; Approval Addition tells us we need the approval of others "to feel good about" ourselves (a common reason for doing the "right" thing in my childhood home was "What will the neighbors think?"); The Blame Game refers to looking for "fault" and identifying the person or persons deserving punishment (and that someone could be us); Shame overwhelms through making one feel unable to change (which is a form of hopelessness).McGee deals with the problems in four individual chapters, all made abundantly clear through the use of illustrations or examples. Following or interspersed between them are chapters on God's antidote: for The Performance Trap, justification; for Approval, reconciliation; for the Blame Game, propitiation; and for Shame, regeneration. Put together, they cover God's plan of redemption. After finishing the book I wondered if the organization was a bit forced--after all, we need the fullness of redemption for any one of the problem areas. Yet it was an effective way to break up and maintain interest while looking at abstract theological concepts. My attention did not waver.Three concluding chapters deal with applying God's Truth. McGee emphasizes the importance of being set free from false beliefs. A chapter on the difference between conviction (revelation of sin that produces true guilt which points to Christ and forgiveness) and condemnation (false guilt that leads to separation from Christ and loss) was priceless. According to McGee, "[God's] conviction of believers is not intended to produce pangs of guilt. Our status and self-worth are secure by the grace of God... Conviction deals with our behavior, not our status before God. Conviction is the Holy Spirit's way of showing the error of our performance in light of God's standard and truth. His motivation is love, protection, and correction."Each chapter includes an excellent thought-provoking interactive section. In addition, the version of the book I purchased is completed by a rather lengthy workbook to use in conjunction with the text. Although I didn't work through it at the time, I did scan the material and decided it would be a good project down the road, perhaps something to study as part of a small group. One always benefits when reaffirming or strengthening a solid foundation.

Remember, many people didn't accept Jesus and He was perfect.3 Blame...Satan says that if we don't perform or are not accepted someone is to blame. i.e. - Parents, teachers, friends, and others.Ultimately we blame ourselves for our failures, too.4. Shame...Satan says we are what we are and cannot change. God says that we can be transformed by the renewing of our minds. (Romans 12:2)The Search for Significance is not a fast read and takes time, sometimes years to digest and apply.It's one of my favorite books. It's been in my "hard copy" library for years. I'm glad to be able to add it to my Kindle at a super value price!
