Wow! What a spectacular book. This book is a must if your interested in the mythology of the Aztecs, Mayans or other Mesoamericancivilizations. It is profusely illustrated with black & white line drawings and photographs and is written in an easy to understand text that covers just about everything you could possibly ever want to know. I have learned a great deal from perusing this book and you will, too.This certainly is a book to add to you library.

As a kid, I used to love paging through the dictionary, stopping here and there to read the definition of an interesting word. You can do the same with this book, but it's a lot easier to find words you don't know. The depth of detail, and the occasional mysteries that turn up, are fascinating. You can't help but learn about ancient cultures of Mexico through reading this wonderful dictionary.Here's an illustration of what I mean, from the definition of calendar (which was only 260 days long!) concerning Venus:"In both Mexican and Maya records, Venus was recorded to appear for 236 days as the morning star, then to disappear for 90 days during Superior Conjunction, reappear as the evening star for 250 days, then briefly vanish into Inferior Conjunction before reappearing as the morning star. For reasons impossible to reconstruct, these calculations ignore the pattern of Venus that can be observed by the naked eye: roughly equal periods of 263 days for both morning and evening star, divided by disappearances of 50 and 8 days."WHY would such a people, who were very observant of the sky, describe the cycle of Venus so at odds with what anyone can see? This book is full of this type of information.

Beautiful, well written well researched and well illustrated book on major Meso-American pre-Contact deities and paradigms. I recommend a copy of 'Burning Water" or "A Scattering of Jades" for some Aztec poetry.

I enjoyed looking through this "dictionary," but I hope it is revised with separate sections on the Olmec, Maya, and Aztecs (the alphabetical format could be retained). As a "dictionary," it also should have been much longer (four or five hundred pages instead of two hundred).Nevertheless, the general reader interested in Mesoamerica will enjoy this book. I have a large collection of books on Mesoamerica, and I found several illustrations that I have not seen before. There is a fascinating picture of a jaguar skeleton with a jade ball in its mouth (Aztec).The illustration of a Maya dancer is also fascinating. "In a state of shamanic transformation, a May lord would take on an animal self or 'uay,' most commonly the jaguar."Another shows a "Maya figure wearing a War Serpent headdress." The fangs of the serpent rise above the figure's head.Still another shows "The monkey scribal gods painting a codex." The monkey-headed men are dressed like Maya scribes.I would recommend buying a used copy of this book.

I just received this book a couple of days ago, so this is an early review. This "dictionary" is more like an encylcopedia and is an excellent and unique primer on Mesoamerican deities and symbology. I am not aware of any other similarly accessible books available for a popular or non-academic market. Overall, this is a very good book and a useful tool for beginning your research into Mesoamerican religion. I give it four stars instead of five because I would have liked the book to be stratified by culture area (e.g. a Central Mexico section, a Maya Section, etc.). As it stands now, deities, symbols, and concepts fom across Mesoamerica are simply organized alphabetically.

This is a great book for anyone wanting to understand the Mayan culture. It has many great illustrations as well as understandable descriptions. You don't have to be a student or professor to be able to understand the writing!It was also delivered on time and the book was in wonderful condition!

I find this book to be an easy reference for lots of the symbols found in the various early cultures of Central America. Although not an extensive description of each symbol or deity, it gives a general definition. This might be best for someone new to the many early cultures of Mexico. It can easily be taken along on a trip to some of the ancient ruins as a reference for many of the images that are prevalent in their art. Since many of these groups have similar roots and share many beliefs and symbols, one can begin to understand the context of the religion and art of the people.

My daughter is entering the entire world of volleyball, competition, club, etc. I loved this book because it demystified a lot of what all the parents around me are talking about in terms of strategies for getting scholarships. It confirmed my suspicion that 90% of what I hear is not true. My husband who has been active in the entire scene for 45 years disagreed with some of the strong opinions in this book, but found most of it he agreed with and were consistent with his experiences and observations. The writer is not a fan of beach, unfortunately. It is most definitely a different sport than indoor. It is hard to find good advice in this arena since there are so many biases for and against the sport.

I've been a longtime reader of the authors blog at [...] and picked up the kindle version of the book the day it was released. It's an absolutely must-have for any parent who has a kid that hopes to play volleyball in college. From a parent's perspective, the author's recruiting calendar is a fabulous resource and very helpful to keep things in perspective so you can help your child move the process along at an appropriate pace while still allowing her/him to do what's most important - enjoy the ride and continue to love the sport!

I consider it a guide book of sorts, and a well loved addition to our library.I believe volleyball is a up-and-coming womens sport that in many ways offers greater recruitment opportunities than other traditional womens sports (like basketball). I you are a parent of a talented young volleyball player, you owe it to them to become educated on the recruiting process so that you may help them to fufill their dreams. Consider this book a small but in valuable investment in your perspective athlete's future.

Philo Farnsworth invented the first all-electronic television system, a fact that few people today know. A small museum in Ft Wayne used to exist to honor him with items related to his invention of the TV and his company, Capehart-Farnsworth which produced televisions until 1965. As a small player in the industry when compared with Farnsworth’s longtime rival, RCA, it could not complte. Then, when the small Ft Wayne museum went out of business, the museum contents were moved and displayed for a short time in the nearby WWII museum. On a visit, I noted they were gone. When I asked what happened, I was told they were sold on e-bay!!. Most visitors probably had no idea who Philo was and his importance in history. This American technical prodigy was poorly treated and this book tells part of the story. I am glad, though, that through this book young people can at least learn a little about Philo and what he did. This book should have gone into much more detail, but as a children book, although accurate, did not tell the whole, very sad, story, of how he was treated by the courts, the government and RCA.

I mistakenly bought the book thinking it was for an adult. It definitely is not. The story of Philo Farnsworth is one of the most tragic in the history of the United States. Farnsworth should have long ago been recognized as the man who created electronic television, but, instead, he was forced to defend himself from repeated lawsuits filed by David Sarnoff, RCA and NBC. Farnsworth died too young, and clearly in the middle class. He should have been one of the wealthiest men this nation has ever known. He would not have ended as well as he did if it were not for the Church of Later Day Saints, which helped him in his battle against Sarnoff. Edwin Armstrong, the man who developed FM radio, was not so fortunate. I understand why this part of the story is not contained in this book, but it's a story that should have been told long ago. It is in the book "Empire of the Air," but it's truly a tragedy.

My grandfather worked with Farnsworth. It’s a fairly accurate take on Farnsworths life, from what I’ve heard and read. Second/third grade and up unless you are a family of avid readers. They don’t get too into the later rough patches in his life, which is preferable in my opinion for a children’s book.

I got this book for my 10 year old's historical wax museum. He was one of the most unique presenters and everyone said they learned something new

Philo Farnsworth should be a household name. This book will help my grandchildren get to know him before television goes into the ashheap of history. Have encountered some of his descendants, & they are every bit as nice in person as in this great narrative

Kids often wonder where and when certain constants in our lives were invented. I think this story does a great job telling about Farnsworth. I will be using it (with other books) to teach a unit on inventions and innovations.

My mom loves reading anything from Sylvia Browne. Though she doesn't believe in everything she said. She's a fan still. This was one of her favorites and helped her through the lost of her favorite African Grey.

OMG, I love this book. It helped that I have always loved Sylvia Browne, but when I had to say goodbye to my sweet Princess kitty after 17 years with her my heart was broken. I still grieve all my kitties that have passed and reading this book has helped to ease my grief. My kitty Princess got me through some tough dark times. It amazes me the compassion and unconditional love pets give us. Thank you for quick delivery and great condition of this book.

It's beneficial to get her insights that bridge our spiritual understanding of pets. I had to say goodbye to my beloved (incredibly sweet and gentle) pit bull, a breed that she is not complimentary of on more than one occasion in this book. This bothered me and sort-of robbed me of the full benefit I could have gotten, just don't know why she had to go there with putting a negative spin on a breed that has blessed many individuals and families barring a select few. There was at least as much - if not more - of a history of animals in general than anything. I think this book could have been condensed to half and kept its focus on the spiritual component. So why do I give it any stars? Because I did find the spiritual insights to be helpful in helping to heal some of my grief.

I just lost my 4th German shepherd boy, Skylar, nearly 3 weeks ago. He was my baby who became the man of the house and my protector after outliving his daddy (my husband George) and his other 3 siblings(3 German shepherd girls). We comforted and depended on each other as we began our new lives together. Since Skylar has been gone, I've been feeling so alone. Even though I've made new friends and they all got to know and love Skylar, life just isn't the same.I always find myself reading multiple books on grieving and the afterlife after losing a loved one, in order to find comfort. This book was the icing on the cake. It completely reassured me that all of our fur-angels are all in heaven waiting for us. Although it feels like another lifetime to us, to them, it feels like only a few moments. It also validates everything I've read in the past on this subject: animals and the afterlife, or about the afterlife in general. In fact, it even triggered memories about my own fur-angels who have done some amazing things. After reading this book, I'm finally comforted and at peace.

I believe in the here after, just not sure I buy into the totem animal and spirit guide theories. Regardless, the author encourages you to take what you choose from the information she presents. Reinforced my ideas on animals/pets which I found encouraging after my recent loss of my pet/best friend of 17 years.

I loved this book and it let's us know that our pets are sent to us and many of us will reunite with them again. I love it when she says that it's hard for our friends and families to greet us when we pass over due to the many pets who rush to greet us. That touches my heart. Thanks Sylvia for all you left behind for us to read. We know you are looking down on us and you should feel very good about the helpful body of work you left behind for us. I really wanted to like this, especially after having my kitty pass away, but just like other reviews this book is stories only. I would say 90% of the book is just stories. Definitely not what I expected. Bummer...

I bought this book for a friend who was inconsolable over the loss of her dog, picking it out because she questioned whether pets have to reincarnate (and whether her dog was being mistreated by its new owner) or if they need not visit the earth plane again. The book arrived and she promptly read it and told me that it helped her a lot.I read the reviews from it and was a little apprehensive because of some, but i'm very happy I sent it to her because she is more at ease from having read it.I would actually love to read it myself some day.

I always loved watching Sylvia Browne and believed she was really connected with the spirit world but now I’m even more convinced. This book answered so many questions I had over and above about animals and the spirit world and our reason for being on this earth. Animal lovers and pet owners alike will fully enjoy this book and feel closer to their pet after reading this!5 stars because I will definitely re-read this one!

Right off the bat this book had me hooked I knew karma was going to kick Don butt I just didn't see it happening so quickly. Then this thot Farrah I have no words for this child other that nasty and she got what she deserved with her loosey booty self...... I've loved Silk since book one dude really is a good dude and good patience.. I don't know I could deal with all of what he dealt with..... Phoenix she worked my never for a moment I am glad she finally grew a back bone. I've never been threw something like this so it's hard to say what I would or wouldn't do. I am happy that she saw that Silk actually did have her best interest at heart.

This book challenged me to reconsider how I see God's viewpoint on "Healing". Ken's point- which i have often heard with books like this- is that God wants to heal people. This has been a huge hurdle for me. I grew up thinking that 99% of the time God doesn't want to heal and the other 1% (to be honest) God heals because we convince Him to through our prayer and fasting. I've wrestled also with- if God wants to heal people- then why doesn't he heal some of them- even when we pray? I've always believed that what God wants to do... He does. End of story. and then the reality is- he doesn't heal everybody- so how can I say he wants to heal when the reality is he doesn't heal everyone? I'm still not sure if I've resolved this issue. But this book really challenged me to consider- maybe God is not as opposed to healing as i thought... and maybe he wants to heal a whole heck of a lot more than i thought... And maybe he delights in healing and this can be something that forms the foundation of my prayers as I pray for people... very intriguing book..

I found this book very interesting, when it comes to the differences between suffering and sickness. There's a huge span difference in Scriptures, which I hadn't thought about. Jesus healed all sickness and at the same time, cast out demons. Suffering is for a purpose because of mercy, not sainthood..to help get one back on track with God when one slips... but the church has viewed this type of suffering as the same thing as being sick..and it's not. It would make a parent seem very cruel if all he/she did was discipline their child and never tell them why. Ken Blue makes this mind set come alive with facts taken from Scripture.Good book for those whose heart is to see God's people made well.

Ken Blue was one of the young students caught up in the exciting times of "power evangelism" and healing miracles in the early days of the Vineyard church with John Wimber. This book looks at the theology and practice of healing in the name of Jesus. It explains the theological understanding of the Kingdom of God which undergirds the ministry of Jesus and shows how the authority to heal is given to those who are disciples of Jesus. It looks at objections that people have and grapples with the difficult issue of why some people get healed and others do not. I recommend it for anyone hoping to start a healing ministry in their church.

This is one of the best books that I have read concerning the healing ministry. The first section, which covers theological hindrances, is the strength of the work. It will challenge both the skeptic and the enthusiast of divine healing. Blue brings a needed balance to divine healing literature. As a pastor in the charismatic tradition, I highly recommend this book.

The ability to heal is a spiritual gift seldom acknowledged in mainstream churches yet is an undeniable gift from God (See John 14:12 among others). This book is a must read for anyone interested in starting or being involved in a healing ministry or just curious. Either way, you'll be more informed by this straightforward and easy to read book.
