More than a book of numerical parlour tricks, but less than a satisfying immersion into the world of numbers. Having watched videos of his work, I was very impressed with Benjamin's speed and fluidity with numbers, as most people are. He certainly knows his subject and clearly enjoys it. But I feel he has yet to write a good investigation on the subject. I don't know how Michael Shermer's, whom I respect, added to this, but it certainly wasn't in bringing focus to the work. The first third of this book is gold. Sure, you can find much of it online for free, but it's presented here clearly and in an organized fashion. You'll notice that in a lot of the rave reviews, however, the reviewers mention that they "haven't finished the book, but can't wait to do so." I doubt many of them have, and it's not their faults. The book becomes a slog half way through, especially if, like me, you tend to take copious notes and try to really tackle the book like a course in mental mathematics, which it really isn't but on the surface presents itself as the sort of practical tome that will guide you through a better understanding of number theory and computation. The problem is that the authors get a bit carried away. You expect methods that will simplify mathematics or lay the complex groundwork for mentally calculating numbers with minimal effort in the long run. Or maybe just learn some neat tricks. But Benjamin is the type of mountain guide who gets sidetracked at every bush, shrub, running squirrel, bird sound, river and cave he encounters. For every easy road you set out on, Benjamin exclaims, "but you can also do this!" and dedicates a long chapter to various methods that are simply "the long way around". Yes, it's fascinating how casting out nines and elevens works, but do you really need a long explanation of how it works, mapped out diagrams and exercises, etc? The criss-cross method of multiplication works whether you're doing three, four, five, or ten digits. It's actually convoluted and doesn't exactly fit the title of the book. Imagine a book called "The Secrets of Reading", written ostensibly for the layman who may or may not love reading, devoting an entire chapter to decoding and memorizing backwards acrostics and anagrams in epic poetry written in obscure meters. I said that it's a slog for the serious student, but it must seem interminable for the person with only a light interest in what Benjamin is doing. The fact of the matter is, most of this isn't what Benjamin uses for his "lightning calculation" - it's stuff he happens to find interesting. In fact, I myself found better, simpler, more intuitive methods freely distributed online for many of these operations. Some that surprised me Benjamin didn't touch on. Ultimately his digressions are too much for the casual reader and lack enough real theoretical depth that would satisfy a devout student of mathematics. Imagine a carpenter who could hammer 100 nails in under a minute who then proceeded to show you 20 different methods for hammering in a nail or two at a time while throwing in tidbits about the lives of famous carpenters and carpentry styles throughout history. You'll either want to skip the hundred methods and concentrate on two or three that get the job done, or you'll ask to hear more about the history of carpentry but skip the 100 (often redundant or similar) methods for hammering with household objects. This is definitely a book you'll want to skip around in. Too bad the table of contents isn't obliging.

I'm about half way through the book and can say I've definitely picked up some useful tricks. Be warned, this isn't a passive read where everything will suddenly click and you will be a math whiz. I recommend taking the chapters slowly and making your own exercises to really drive the concepts home. The first few chapters are cumulative, but eventually you are able to jump around and learn what tricks sound most appealing to you. My personal favorite is the ability to memorize strings of numbers. Has a ton of practical use in everyday life. I love being good at arithmetic and this book gives you the tools to get there.

I'm retired and having loads of fun with this book on math. The painful paradox is that I have always liked math but it didn't like me; I struggled with math all my life.I am quintessentially stubborn. Never give up. (Pain is temporary, quitting is forever. ) I have purchased books on Algebra and Geometry; I won't lie to you, my struggle continues. The "Secrets of Mental Math" however is fun AND practical. It should be this much fun for everyone.I read it over once without actually practicing any of the tricks having purchased it on Amazon for my Kindle library. I liked it so much I went to used book stores to find a hard copy. If math and magic intrigues you, you should get this book.

OMG, my son is the math hero in his third grade class. Full of tricks like multiply times eleven - any number. Simply do this... 11 x 35: Take the 3 and the 5 and separate them, add 3+5=8 Put the 8 in between the 3 and 5. 11x35 is 385. Another example 11 x 72, separate the 7 and 2. 7+2 = 9. Put the 9 between the 7 and 2 and 11 x 72 = 792. Presto. Your kid is a math genius. The book is full of these.

I bought this book after watching Dr Benjamin's Great Course on video. I can read many times faster than I can watch someone speak so I thought I might get through the information more efficiently by purchasing the book. I also thought there might be additional exercises. Don't get me wrong, the Video course is fun, enlightening and full of real handy tips for mental math. My main complaint is that each chapter is a separate "secret." I haven't even successfully incorporated the last "secret" into my math and there's another one ? (!) If this is to evolve from spectator sport to real world use I need exercises (with answers in the back of the book) so I can practice, practice and practice. The book, alas, follows pretty much the same format as the lectures. There are a few examples, but not many. Each chapter is a separate (often unrelated to the last) tip. So I didn't get any new or additional information, I just got the same information in a different format. I recommend it over the video format because it is less expensive and because you can go as slow or fast as you like

Actually picked up this book to help with the GRE and just found all the math tricks fun. Only about 1/3 the way through but have already cranked up my mental math speed by at least double. Worth the buy!

Terrible book. I can’t believe I had to buy this for a class. I’m not sure who I should be more angry with the person that wrote it, the person that thought it would be a good idea to publish it, or my instructor for deciding he should teach from it (even though he admits that he doesn’t like it either and wants to fInd an alternative).Many of the problems at the end of the chapters aren’t even relevant to what you read about in the chapters. Many of the chapters have the same exact questions.Th authors try to over simply topics from clasical physics on wave mechanics and propagation to the extent that he’d be better off plagiarizing a high school physics book because there is very little explanation of what is being discussed but you have these formulas discussed in the chapters and there are virtually no usable example problems. I mean it’s confounding that a book like this is published and we have to pay this much money for a poorly written piece of garbage. Anyone reading this review that is buying this book because it’s required should raise hell with their department chairs.

This book is a beast, its definably not for the average IT major, more of the cable guy or electric engineer!!

It is usefull to use for the class, but sometime I find it too theoretic.By the way, It's not easy to get the instructor's materials from Stallings' website.

Didn't actually read it, just was required for class. Book goes into a ton of detail, not sure how much is relevant

This is a paperback. Its almost exactly what the teacher ordered, but weirdly the practice questions are not the same as the teacher's hard cover book. The rest of the content matches though.

Stallings has been a great writer on many communications topics but this book falls far by the wayside. As a personal note, he and I graduated with PhDs from MIT the same time and the same Course, but I did not know him. I have used his previous books with great success to get up to speed in many areas. This one, however, is way off the mark. First this is almost a rewrite at best of the 2nd Edition.It fails to discuss 3G and has barely a mention of 4G. Given the dominance of wireless Internet/IP access I would have expected some detailed discussion at the very least. Second, and this is a significant drawback, and a Publisher problem, this is a paperback edition and the pages are so flimsy as to be unusable. The print is almost unreadable. Thus, between the failure to come up to date and the poor quality of production, I would strongly suggest seeking alternatives, even the 2nd Edition. It is a shame, since Stallings has produced many gems in the past.

Content-wise, it is full of information and it provides helpful informative diagrams. The writing style is very technical and to the point. The end of chapter questions are split into two groups, review questions (to recall what was read) and problem questions (to use analytical thinking). Physically, the book cover and pages are very thin, making it a reasonably compact book to carry.

Don't buy this book if you can help yourself.The beginning part of this message was written on 9/10/2016. I'll keep updating this interview if necessary. This book has really pissed me off.There is a giant mistake just in the beginning of the book:On page 15, it says that "There is a direct relationship between the information-carrying capacity of a signal and its bandwidth: The greater the band width, the higher the information-carrying capacity." Then it gives three examples to show the relationship.What is ridiculous is, in all the three cases (Cases I, II, and III, pages 15-17), the information-carrying capacity totally has nothing to do with the bandwidth, but only depends on the fundamental frequency (f) of the carrier wave.How can an author make such a basic, serious mistake is beyond me.Furthermore, it doesn't explain why the frequencies of the harmonics have to be the odd multiples of the fundamental frequency (f). -- I know why, but many other students don't, and the professor didn't explain it either even a student asked. She just said, "To make it a square wave, the frequencies of the harmonics have to be the odd multiples of the fundamental frequency (f)." And she didn't say "why." I wanted to explain, but I just didn't want to "show off."Anyway, it's not a good book. I had to get it only because it was required for my class.Today (9/15/2016) I found more mistakes in the book. On pages 95-97, about the ground wave, sky wave, and line-of-sight wave, the text says they are of "up to about 3 MHz," "3-30 MHz," and "above 30 MHz" respectively, while the numbers on Figure 5.1 says "below 2 MHz," "2-30 MHz," and "above 30 MHz."Also today (9/15/2016), Example 5.1 on page 101, in the text the satellite is 35,863 km from earth, but in calculation, the number becomes 35.853×1000,000 -- You see? The last three digits of the two are not the same: one is "863," and the other "853."How can a person make so many mistakes in a textbook? And this is just the beginning.The book is trash.

Sandra L. Richter is an amazing professor! She educates you in a down to earth way. You feel very enlightened and want to study with her more. She explains in detail and simplifies complex situations in the Holy Bible to the level an average person can realize how these people feel and live. There are many "Ah Ha moments." Your eyes will be opened and you will truly see how great God is, I felt as though I had looked through a window into our history and saw everything in living action.I recommend this book very highly.

I have been studying the Bible for over sixty years. And I would say that if you can read only one book that explains the Old Testament and how it delves into the New Testament, this is that book. Sandra L. Richter presents an approach that I had never before encountered. Yet it is quite understandable to a layperson. Charts and diagrams are included. I also saw the accompanying DVD. Hearing the author and seeing her personality added an enjoyable dimension to her teaching.

The Epic of Eden provides a highly readable, informative, interesting and relatively concise guide to the Old Testament for everyone seeking greater knowledge about the foundation of the New Testament. Dr. Richter skillfully traces the Old Testament timeline focusing on Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses and David. Her lucid writing style, charts, maps, and glossary are helpful in orienting readers. This book also motivated me to research a wide range of Old Testament topics. Most importantly, Professor Richter's in-depth knowledge and extensive experience gave me the confidence to trust the accuracy of her research and writing. Highly recommended!

This book is exceptional. I have now recommended to both my Christian friends and Jewish friends. It is more than I hoped for. Sandra not only makes the Old Testament come alive historically she also shows that she an understanding of its meaning for the Christian today. She makes it very relevant. Highly recommend this book to both Christians and I believe those of the Jewish faith will Love it as well.

If you are looking for a book that organizises the Old Testament in a readable way this is it. As a Christian I've always struggled with my understanding of the connection of the two covenants.nThis book harmonizes the covenants into one of God's redemption. Great read. Sometimes technical but keeps you wanting more.

Christians in general do not seem to grasp how cultural the Old Testament, so miss the richness of what the early followers of Jesus understood. Dr. Sandra Reichter does an excellent job of explaining without complicating some key elements we miss. What a blessing to the Body of Christ is this Study! Read this book! You will not be sorry.

If you've ever struggled with the Old Testament and what it means for Christians, I would recommend this book. The Epic of Eden serves as a textbook for my Intro To Old Testament class, but it is so much more. Richter writes with a familiarity that makes it feel like you're being discipled instead of being lectured. High recommend.

I wish that I had read Dr. Richter's book - or had the level of understanding I've come away with after reading it - many years ago. I wish this had been required reading as a prerequisite for my seminary time at Dallas Theological Seminary. Invest the money and get a copy - you won't regret Dr. Richter's fun, approachable, gracious, and memorable style of presenting this 'Christian Entry into the Old Testament.' I've also left a comment for Mr. Wilson, who at the time of this was the sole 3 star review of the book. I think Mr. Wilson's review is unfair and misguided. Expecting an author to provide answers - or even take a firm position - on topics that are outside of the scope of the work is poor scholarship. Richter is fair and gracious and leaves room for others to stand upon her shoulders as she is doing and credits those who have come before her. Excellent book!

About the Author

James Campbell Quick, PhD, is John and Judy Goolsby Distinguished Professor, Goolsby Leadership Academy at the University of Texas at Arlington, and visiting professor, Lancaster University Management School, United Kingdom. He is a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, American Psychological Association (APA), and of the American Institute of Stress. He was awarded an APA presidential citation in 2001 and the 2002 Harry and Miriam Levinson Award by the American Psychological Foundation. He and his brother Jonathan originated preventive stress management, a term included in the 2007 APA Dictionary of Psychology. He has more than 100 publications in 10 languages and holds a 2009 University Award for Distinguished Record of Research. Colonel (Ret.) Quick was awarded the Legion of Merit by the United States Air Force and the Maroon Citation by Colgate University. He is married to the former Sheri Grimes Schember, both are members of the Chancellor's Council of the University of Texas System and the Silver Society, American Psychological Foundation.Lois E. Tetrick, PhD, received her doctorate in industrial and organizational psychology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1983. Upon completion of her doctoral studies, she joined the faculty of the Department of Psychology at Wayne State University and remained there until 1995, when she moved to the Department of Psychology at the University of Houston. She joined the faculty at George Mason University as the director of the Industrial and Organizational Psychology Program in 2003. Dr. Tetrick is editor of the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology. She coedited the first edition of the Handbook of Occupational Health Psychology with James Campbell Quick and Health and Safety in Organizations with David Hofmann. She also coedited The Employment Relationship: Examining Psychological and Contextual Perspectives with Jacqueline Coyle-Shapiro, Lynn Shore, and Susan Taylor. Dr. Tetrick is a fellow of the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology, the American Psychological Association (APA), the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), and the Association for Psychological Science. She served as president of SIOP (2007-2008), chair of the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management (2001-2002), SIOP representative on the APA Council of Representatives (2003-2005), and member of the APA Board of Scientific Affairs (2006-2009).
