I should have purchased this book when it first came out two years ago. I've been on the mobile app design team at my company for two and a half years, and I think this book is a must-have for any tech company needing guidance or validation on how to design better and consistent customer experiences for their products, whether they are web applications, online tools, mobile apps, or e-commerce sites. The four-part breakdown that Dan investigates and analyzes in his book will help you break down your own designs and app flows so you can do your own analysis and bring a consistent model to your entire product. While I don't know that this book will teach you HOW to design an interaction, it will definitely teach you how to vastly improve the ones you already designed, provide validation, and reinforce best practices. The details in this book are super helpful -- how and when to use animation in your microinteraction, for example, or the importance of labels in your trigger affordances, or how often your users want to know about system errors. Employing these practices, even if you can't employ all of them, WILL make a difference in the design and experience of your product, but most importantly, it will influence whether users perceive your product as working smoothly or being error-prone, or, god forbid, boring. Read this book if you haven't already. Keep it in your cube for easy reference.
Incredibly important read. Design is in the details, and this book highlights that so well. It's not just about the pretty look, there's so much more thought that should go into digital and physical design! Anyone who wants to know what interaction designers do, or wants to transition to design, or wants to increase their knowledge should buy this. Short read. I only gave this a 4-star for 2 reasons:1) Show even more real life examples2) The last chapter was disappointing. It was all text and at times became hard to follow.
This book does not flow. It is very choppy, covers a wide range of topics which in my humble opinion have nothing to do with microinteractions. The designer seem to confuse user actions and app logic with microinteractions, he is mixing apples and oranges. I thought this book would focus on design, and the subtle details of app responsiveness and guidance. Instead, the book is talking about triggers, loops, logic, rules, robots on Mars, and dishwashers (not kidding). The author can't write, plus his style is very dry and boring. I struggled to get through only 140 pages, thats bad when considering that I'm a fast avid reader. The only reason I give this book 2 stars as opposed to 1 is because I learned a few useful nuggets from it. I would not recommend reading this book, save your time, mental effort, and money.
Provided the insight I was looking for and validation of my interest in microcopy and micro interactions. It was also quick to ready which helped sustain my focus and motivation.
Everything you need to know to get started with thinking about, talking about, designing and testing micro interactions. There are plenty of illustrations and examples that make the concepts clear.
"Microinteractions" - the tiny details of how a product or its user interface interacts with its user. These details differentiate between a good, useful product and a great, delightful one. The is a very cool topic to look into, and Dan has done a good job in starting the conversation.Dan provides a framework for discussing microinteractions: 1) triggers, 2) rules, 3) feedback, and 4) loops and modes. Personally, I find this framework somewhat analogous to, but less well defined than, Don Norman's "human action cycle". Dan also provides several guidelines for designing microinteractions, such as: 1) bring the data forward and 2) don't start from zero. Simple ideas but often overlooked in design, and I appreciate that.The book provides many interesting examples of well-designed microinteractions, which is what makes the book a good read. However, I do find some of the ideas and discussions somewhat weakly structured, vague, or verbose.
Dan Saffer has written perhaps his best book to date, on a topic that is increasingly deserving of attention: the details of interaction design, or "microinteractions". While as designers of digital products & services we often get caught up in debates around "design thinking" or "skeuomorphism", Dan has astutely pointed our profession's compass to what matters most--how to make those daily interactions, truly the details, across devices and interfaces satisfying and delightful. He provides a nicely memorable, systematic way of decomposing the core elements of a tightly scoped interaction for mundane events such as logging in, syncing data, attaching a file, etc. -- what I always vaguely called "the nuts and bolts" of interaction design--into a specific sensible framework [trigger > rules > feedback > loops/modes] that a designer can carry with them into any design session or heuristic evaluation. Filled with great examples, including full color images of actual interfaces, and amplified with Dan's easy writing style that makes his anecdotes come alive, this book deserves a high priority spot on every interaction designer's library. I also want to applaud the historical references that Dan includes on fundamental interactions like copy/paste and the file save model, that I'm sure many young digital designers today may not know about. I'll certainly be referring back to "Microinteractions" often for my complex design projects!
I'm note quite done with this book, I'm probably about 70% through and I have found it to be one of the best books that I've read in the field of UX/Design. I highly recommend it, it is without question worth the time and money to buy and read it.
