About the Author
Kat Von D is a renowned tattoo artist and the star of the former hit television series LA Ink, which ran for five successful years. I really love this book. I love the art work and the lay out. Its a piece of art in itself. I had a hard time warming up to KVD because there was just something so stand off-ish about her. After getting into make up and falling in love with her brand and the artistry that goes into her packaging. Being an artist myself, I couldn't help but give her the respect she deserved as a master of her craft. I wanted to know more about the art side of her since I identify greatly with her dark and gothic taste.I eventually decided "you know what. I like KVD, better yet...I LOVE HER!", so i got this book to see what she was all about. granted there were alot of things she's said and and done that I really had to work to turn a blind eye to. Jefree Star is another hero of mine and seeing how she went about that whole situation really had me struggling to not jump the hate train for her. I do think she use to get more hate then she deserved and it always seemed people were looking for a reason to hate her for everything she did, so I stood by her side and continued buying her stuff. Even as far as dropping $160 on a limited edition make up train case! which is one of the more impulsive and stupid things ive dropped that amount of money on. However, then the wedding came..........If you bought this book, then I'm sure your familiar to the comments our pregnant newly wed Kat has made. She decided to dismiss the countless doctors (including her dad) and years of medical research and evidence in favor of becoming an anti-vaxer, and I just cant. Its one thing to say "You know what, I dont know anything about vaccines, I don't like what i hear so I'm going to do extensive research from credible sources. I will speak to those who are for it an against it and see where my beliefs lie. I will hold MEDICALLY AND SCIENTIFIC evidence higher than a few Netflix documentaries and the opinions of NOT DOCTORS. I will be open minded in my search so that it is not swayed by biasness." Instead, she lashes out at her fan who were genuinely concerned, the people who allows her to live her luxurious life and tell them to basically, "shut the fk up and mind your own business" after she herself put it out there. She is so willing to listen to ppl who say "vaccines are bad" but so quick to ignore her fans who have shared stories of how a vaccine could have saved a life of a loved one or how a lack of vaccine lead to hospitalization of themselves or a someone close to them. She has just gone about all this is the worst way possible.I will not give this book a 1 or 2 stars because of my personal feelings towards Kat at the moment. I still buy her products and I will still read this book. My feelings do not take away the quality and artistic visuals of this book. I will however give it 3 star as I feel it is as neutral of a rating I can give it. Weighing how great this book is against the horrible way she has treated her fans in recent months.........3 stars is the best I can do.
Just like the other reviewer, I didn't know what to expect when I ordered this book. I actually came across her 2nd book, Tattoo Chronicle and then I realized that she has this book out first. I went to Amazon and bought this book for $19. I absolutely love it! I already love tattoo to begin with. I only have a few but I am fascinated by the story and meaning behind each and every tattoo. I was dying to find out what her story was about each one.I got this book Saturday afternoon and started reading it the following day. It was sooooo interesting to me that I was done by Wednesday. I do think that it is because it has a lot of pictures and graphics of the tattoo that made it super easy to read. The first part of the book is basically about Kat Von D's life. How she ran away and met this boy named James and fell in love. Who she came across in order to start tattooing. A little bit about her family and her Latina roots.The middle part of her book is about the tattoos on her body. She didn't really go into detail about each and every single one of her tattoo, I was sort of disappointed in that. I was looking forward to know and understand why she put so many tattoo on her body. Why she had chosen this particular placement and design. I realized that maybe it wasn't as meaningful as I was hoping that each of her tattoo to be. Either way, it was very nice to be able to see the close up of her tattoo instead of just a big black and grey blur. And she also tell you which one hurts the most which I was literally laughing out loud about.Then she tells you a little bit about her love for music, why she likes Ludwig Van Beethoven. Although she didn't get into detail about why she would have 7 tattoos of Ludwig Van Beethoven, it just proves that music means that much to her. Then her book talks a little bit about the tattoo machines and some of the very famous tattoo artists work and where you can find them all over the world.It was very easy to read where I didn't think she was trying to be someone she's not. A lot of people think that just because she is heavily tattooed doesn't make her any less feminine or beautiful. She likes her music and she knows them well. She likes her make up and she knows that well too. I personally think she is beautiful. And if you like tattoo, wants to know about tattoo, like to look at some really awesome tattoos, I would recommend getting this book. As soon as I was done, I had 3 people asking me to lend it to them. Even though I was kind of selfish and didn't want to share my brand new book that I just bought and just finished reading, I figured I should let them see why I think Kat Von D is beautiful. Of course, that is just in my opinion~
Its a autobiography at its core but spreads out into so much more. She shares the spotlight with other people who inspired her and shows of some of the people wearing her art. There's even a part where she offers advice on the best way in going about getting a tattoo and aftercare. Great book!
I love Kat and this book was really well written and gives a more detailed biography of her life in mexico, how she started tattooing and her development as an artist. It has some of her own tattoos, some of her ex Nikki Sixx, and it is inspirational even if you're not a tattoo artist. I am fascinated with her because she is not only laid back, but talented and has done a lot just within the three seasons of LA Ink. The book cover is appealing and its kind of padded and looks worn and old. I love that. It suits the book itself. The shipping took a bit but it was so worth it!
