Williams' "Otherland" is one of my absolute favorite sci-fi epics. But it has to be said--this is not, in any strict genre definition of the word, a novel. This is the first installment in a prose epic of stunning scope and narrative/intertextual skill, but many of its greatest payoffs don't come to fruition until the end of the final volume. So perhaps not the best choice for slow readers or readers who don't enjoy extreme long-format storytelling. However, Williams remains one of the best prose stylists in traditional epic fantasy/science fantasy, his characters are compelling, and the plot and worldbuilding pack a bone-chilling punch.
I have enjoyed this "series" of books, however, calling it a series is a bit misleading. None of the first three books has an ending that is in any way satisfying. They're not seperate stories, it's one long saga. It's well written, but VERY busy. Each book feels like you've read 3 or 4 separate books. I counted in the middle of book two, and there were 14 separate individual story lines going all at once, back and forth, and then even more get added. It's a bit much, like the author couldn't decide what he wanted to write about, so wrote about everything. Each book is more like 20-30 short stories, with all the short stories having the same 20 cast member, and tied together in a way that, 3/4 of the way thru book 3, still isn't entirely clear. And yet, I've kept reading, so there's definitely something there.
First of all, I have read hundreds of Kindle books. I love Kindle books. I read books because I want to be entertained. You would think an author would write with that in mind. But when I trudge halfway through the book and still cannot figure out what the heck is going on, that's not entertaining. That may be some weird idea of artistry, but if so, offer the work in an art gallery; not a bookstore. I rarely give up on a book, but I gave up on this one. I won't be buying any more of this artists work.
Stimulating and challenging, one has to use one's brain reading this. I enjoy the fact that it is set originally in South Africa and yet is modern fantasy - the juxtapostion of a land which is not considered advanced in the average person's mind with a highly advanced society in the future is lovely, teasing at us and at our preconceptions. This is also felt in the language of the characters - Long John definitely speaks a primitive form of English, while living in a society well in the future, with a daughter teaching in a university with a degree in engineering...
Fascinating, complex tale of the human spirit and desires, technology, socio-economic issues......I've enjoyed every selection I've ever read from this author, he creates such realistic and relatable characters and stories, even thought they're often found in alien and unfamiliar settings. He can really paint a picture with words, and this series is definitely among my favorites. Prepare to be sucked in and swept away once you get the initial story set-up out of the way!
Tad Williams takes his sword and sorcery skills and applies them to a near future adventure, while simultaneously inventing a new genre. This gripping read involves enormous wealth and murder all tied to the fantastic virtual world of Otherland. Meanwhile in RL (real life), Renie tries to save her brother, who she believes has been made comatose by the mysterious Grail Brotherhood, all the time at a breakneck pace.Be prepared for a long read. The four books series must all be read to get to ending.Highly recommended and one of my favorite books
In many ways, this is an unconventional work.It is not a series of four books. It is one big honking book published in four chunks. In pacing and plotting, it reminds me of a 100-issue run of a comic book. There's a continuously unfolding series of events, building out from the center, but not necessarily toward ever increasingly dramatic climaxes. What Williams has done here is ingenious. He really hasn't created any new plot devices or directions; you'll see few things here that you've never ever seen before. What he has done is to combine them all.Sure, we saw (for just one example) human minds wired into vast virtual reality in the Matrix, but we have no idea how they got there. Plenty of government conspiracies, plenty of power-mad scary guys. But ordinarily these works get fuzzy around the edges, and the writer asks us to accept that some things just ARE so he can get on with the main story. What Williams does is shuffle these several different novels together and set them up to lean on each other. And where other authors follow a narrative thread only so far and then say, "Well, yeah, there's another story over there, but we don't have time for it, so come on back here," Williams shows us all of everything, and shows us some combinations of plot elements that we might never have imagined. If you like reading these multivolume works for the enormous drama and a payoff whose operatic grandeur is proportional to the page count, you may nod off around book three here. And the characters are moving and effective, few stick in your head weeks after you've finished the work. But what Williams gives us instead is a vast, far-ranging, multi-character, multi-multi-themed tapestry that is enormous in scope and which has to be walked over a section at a time.
This is the first book in Tad Williams's Otherland Series (there are four in total) and it's great. This book takes off at a fast pace and never lets up. The characters are very well crafted and the situations (especially the little news blurbs at the beginning of each chapter) seem like they are not that far-fetched.The series takes place in a somewhat dystopian future (perhaps 25-50 years from now) where the bulk of people spend a fair amount of time in virtual reality. As you might imagine, this has ramifications for the character's real lives. Definitely worth the read.
