Review

Mojo Workin' is a key contribution to the study of Hoodoo in America, with some energizing new ideas about its origins, early expression, and broader religious aspects."--Journal of American Folklore "The book presents possibilities for reassessing some misunderstood aspects of the African American religious experience. It is with a profound respect for Hoodoo as a living practice that Hazzard-Donald brings a kind of moral authority to her scholarship. In so doing she also distills many of the polarizing dynamics present in Hoodoo-Conjure communities today."--Nova Religio  "Hazzard-Donald set out to demonstrate the need to include African American Hoodoo in the study of African American religion in the New World.  The search she presents in her work clearly validates the belief that there is a strong connection between African American Hoodoo and African American religion. . . . The author provides a great deal of research and analysis that is sure to aid scholars, students, and enthusiasts."--Journal of Folklore Research"A powerful reinterpretation of African American Hoodoo. This comprehensive volume will be an important tool for anyone interested in African American folk belief and the supernatural."--Jerrilyn McGregory, author of Downhome Gospel: African American Spiritual Activism in Wiregrass Country  "Hazzard-Donald's formulation of Hoodoo's evolution represents a new chronology for its study and transformation over time. It's a valuable contribution to the growing number of volumes concerned with African-based traditional spiritual beliefs in the New World."--American Studies "This tradition has been little studied especially within the fields of religious studies. Instead it has been left to anthropologists, sociologists, and certain popular cultural reports to present what have been incomplete and often offensive materials. This work has done an exemplary job of correcting that lacuna… A significant contribution to the literature of African-based traditions in the United States." --Religious Studies Review

Katrina Hazzard-Donald is the "go-to" authority for information on true Black Belt Hoodoo. I am one of the marketeers the author mentions who owns a botánica and although my initial training is in Louisiana/New Orleans HooDoo it, my spirit demanded a different approach and practice. It is my ambition to honor the truest origins of the products I carry and use to help others. "Mojo Workin'" is one of the many books I read for reference so I can provide accurate information to my clients and correct the many misconceptions that are rampant in this field. Hazard-Donald's lucid and direct writing clears the mud created by those who insist on campaigning onto an existing tradition and calling it their own. For any American rootworker to walk with dignity and integrity through their craft, they need the information contained in the pages of this book. Although written from an academic perspective, the author created a page-turner that is compelling and rings with a clear peal of authenticity that cannot be denied. I am grateful every day for this book and recommend it highly, before any other book on authentic HooDoo history.

This book is a revelation. There is no other word for it. This is required reading for anyone interested in any form of conjure. It has also given me a view of the trauma of american slavery in a way no book directly on the subject ever did. Clear, concise writing and consistently brilliant analysis. I can not recommend this book strongly enough. Enjoyable and informative and essential.

I was looking for a historical book on hoodoo, I really found it. There is no spells, no rituals at all here.

Speaking as one of this culture, this is one of the most authentic Hoodoo books available. The author did the culture justice!

Thank you. I absolutely love this book laces with so much information of our early traditional practice, it's affirming to know the particular ways came from. This book reveal truth to lies we were taught.Highly recommend this book. Its important to understand the history so we can recuperate and maintain our cultural practices. In the words of Killer Mike "trying to survive Cultural Assassination"

For the longest time people needed Mojo Workin' because African American spirituality has always been culturally appropriated from the larger class. As a result, African American spirituality has always been disregarded as a foolish superstitious practice. Although I disagree with Hazzard-Donald on some points such as the origin of the word hoodoo, which I believe is a corruption of the Spanish word Judio (hoo-dy-oh) based upon their interaction with the Kongo descendants. The author has done a great job presenting valuable information so that Hoodoo/Rootwork/Conjure is respected with all other African Diaspora traditions. This is a great book for understanding the mindset of the early African Americans who created this rich and powerful tradition.

I appreciate this book giving an accurate account of my peoples history. One day when I was studying,I came across this book, I just had to have it! I'm so glad I brought it because so little of our history is taught in school. This book helped me understand why we CATCH the holy ghost. I took a look at a woman's website, who claimed to sell hoodoo supplies. I scrolled through the list, and noticed some items she was selling made no sense for a root worker to buy because the root worker has to take certain steps to make certain things....... It was obvious the woman didn't know what she was talking about, and just wanted to make a profit. The author of this book is not racist as some claim, she is just telling the truth. Roots is in our blood, we were born with it, and we live it.

I absolutely loved this book. I originally ordered this book as a resource book for a paper I was writing for my Africana Studies class. I was surprised on how thorough it walked you through the history of hoodoo. I would highly recommend this book.
