Review

“When it comes to reading the Bible with my kids, I am among the well-meaning and terrified. I find that I don't know where to start or how to navigate past my own faith baggage to engage my kids in healthy, wonderfilled conversations about God's story. This Bible devotional offers a way in. It honors questions, engages creativity, and is flexible enough to work for your particular family, no matter where you're at. What a gift!” (Addie Zierman, author of When We Were on Fire and Night Driving)“The Family Bible Devotional is a great resource for parents who want to engage their children in fresh and meaningful discussions about the Bible. Fun activities, interesting facts, and thought-provoking questions will turn family devotions from boring to exciting. I wish I had this book when my kids were growing up!” (Crystal Bowman, best-selling, award-winning author of over 100 books for children including Our Daily Bread for Kids)“Trying to engage the whole family in Bible study in a way that feels authentic and beneficial often leaves me feeling lost. But Sarah Wells is a trustworthy guide. The Family Bible Devotional makes Scripture accessible and memorable. My kids kept bringing up the stories they’d heard in this devotional for days after we read them—and I learned new things, too.” (Amy Peterson, author of Dangerous Territory: My Misguided Quest to Save the World)“In this excellent devotional, Sarah Wells has packed a lifetime of inspiration and joyful applications that will guide families into a deeper appreciation of Scripture.” (Dandi Daley Mackall, award-winning author of over 500 books for adults and children, including My Bible Animals Storybook)“The Family Bible Devotional has added a fresh new dimension to mornings with my 13-year-old daughter. Background information, Scripture unhampered by verse notations (it reads like a story!), and thought-provoking questions and prayer prompts not only serve to structure our discussions during busy breakfast time, but challenge us to consider Scripture from new perspectives. My daughter has been inspired to ask tough questions and deepen her understanding of the Bible, all before the school bus comes around the corner!” (Tania Runyan, poet and author of How to Write a Poem, How to Read a Poem, and How to Write a College Application Essay)“When writing for children, especially when topics are confusing or tough to wade through, I think it's important for kids to have a narrator they can trust, and Wells doesn't disappoint. Her writing is friendly and thought-provoking, and the activities she's designed to go along with the devotions are creative and fun. Here's a family devotional that allows parents to walk alongside their children as they explore God's story, and find their place in it.” (Callie Feyen, author of Romeo & Juliet: The Teacher Diaries)“This book is truly a gift: fun, creative, and sound. My family loved it!” (Craig Hovey, author of Unexpected Jesus: The Gospel as Surprise and To Share in the Body: A Theology of Martyrdom for Today's Church)“A love of Scripture is something that is taught. Sarah Wells has created a tool that can help parents do just that for our children. Thanks, Sarah, for writing such a great resource for families!” (Steven Cole, Executive Director, The Brethren Church Denomination)

"This family devotional aims to cultivate healthy conversation between parents and their children about the Bible and its stories." And so begins Sarah Wells' beautiful and honest family adventure into scripture. There are several things that raise this family devotional above many others I've seen. It is designed to inspire questions rather than to offer answers. More than teaching Bible stories, Sarah teaches families how to approach the Bible as explorers and seekers. Once you have finished the 52 lessons you could easily apply her "technique" to other passages. Related to this question driven method is that Sarah doesn't provide simple "Sunday School" answers, but gives kids (and parents) permission to wonder, doubt, and ask questions about what they are ready. This freedom is rarely discovered in other children's study aids.Sarah covers the great themes of Scripture that all of us want our kids to discover: forgiveness, grace, love, God's provision, and more. Jonah isn't just a story about a big fish, it's about second chances. God's miracles are to show both his power and his absolute desire to restore all things to himself. You'll find that the way Sarah approaches devotions leaves room for a lot of discovery and will fit your family regardless of your theological leanings.Lastly, I love that Sarah takes families beyond stories about other characters and invites them to see themselves in God's story. She includes many of the stories kids love (creation, the ark, King David) but also challenges them with passages not often found in family devotionals (the woman caught in adultery, John 1, Job). Sarah gives the readers permission to skip around, go at our own pace, and simply enjoy the adventure. On a practical note, the book includes "Tips For Keeping Kids Engaged" and an easy to follow plan study method (setting up the story, read, talk about it, closing thought, prayer prompt, activities, and extra facts) for each lesson. Get this book today and get your kids excited about the Bible.

My fourteen-year-old daughter and I start our day every morning reading this devotional together. Each lesson only takes a few minutes. The content is easy to understand and yet rich with questions that encourage conversation. I've searched for years for a devotional like this and am glad to have finally found it. I highly recommend "The Family Bible Devotional" for families with children or teens.

Excellent family devotional book. Short enough to keep the kids engaged, yet good questions to spark discussion. Highly recommend it.

I like this book. I'm a mom to 4 kids, ages 11, 9, 6, and 3. I want to read the Bible with my kids. I imagine reading the Bible with them. Sometimes, I even HAVE read it with them--but I sometimes I haven't known where to start, or what to talk about once we read it. Or, I'm so tired that I can't even pick out a passage. That's where this book is a great help.Sarah M. Wells has curated some great, thought-provoking passages (largely well-known stories), woven them together in a thoughtful thematic order, provided some helpful context to the ideas, given gentle but not insipid discussion questions, and added some actually do-able family activities based on the themes. If a family were to actually use this book, they would gain a good deal of wisdom, a sense of the richness of the scripture, and be encouraged to feel comfortable holding the Word in their hands, asking questions together, and exploring God's character together.Wells has also managed to avoid some of the more annoying features of Christian books. There's not a bunch of moralizing, not a bunch of telling your young people how to be "good," not a bunch of obviously sectarian points so that only a narrow set of people could be comfortable using it, not a bunch of neatly explaining or ignoring things that might be troubling. There's also not a lot of Christian cliche in here, which I personally find refreshing. It's a book that respects the intellect and the ability of its readers while providing some helpful assistance to just find a place to get going in family Bible study. I will be continuing to read it with my people, and would give it as a gift. Definitely recommend.
