I've recently got interested in Arduino platform, so I've purchased the hardware and got some manuals including this one to help me master using it faster. and so far it has been an exciting journey! I keep trying new little project every day, and this manual helped me so much in assembling and testing these first project. Everything of an Arduino board is clearly explained inside it and instructions to use them are fun to read and very tempting to try for a project. I wish I could have this book a few months ago. I appreciate the effort of the author and very much recommended to everyone.

The contents were supposed to be three books from beginner to advanced. The first two books were very simplistic compared to other Aduino books I have purchased. The third was supposed to have advanced projects but only had code and no illustrations of the projects. In fact there were no illustrations of projects in the whole book which is inappropriate for a training/tutorial book. It is almost like the author pulled things from other books and didn't do the experiments himself. I wouldn't recommend this book for anyone.

I would say they range from very basic to intermediate. There is nothing too advanced. But it is good to get your feet wet, especially if you are not great at programming because for every project it breaks down the code and explains everything step-by-step.

A really good introductory guide on Arduino. excellent book and really help me to Intermediate and 19 Sample Designs and Codings. I found this book to be a useful intro to the Advance Crash Guide in Arduino Programming. There has to be better books out there.

Arduino is really an informative book. This book is more than my expectations. 19 Sample Designs and Codings are really helpful. This is a great book for beginners! Thanks author.

Not bad for price, good for beginner

I really enjoyed this book. This is a really good introductory guide on Arduino. excellent book and really help meto Intermediate and 19 Sample Designs and Co-dings. I found this book to be a useful intro to the Advance CrashGuide in Arduino Programming. This book is very well written by the author and i highly recommend this book toall of you guys.

This book does very well for a complete Arduino newbie such as myself. However, I needed to pick out points from both books to get things going. This book does go into great detail, and with lots of examples. Within two months, I was able to implement an Arduino based project for work. This is now my 'go-to' book when I forget things. This is a thorough beginner's book - highly recommended.

Chronicling the rise of Vertex, one of the first companies to dabble in rational drug design, the Billion Dollar Molecule follows the brilliant Josh Boger as he attempts to become the next Merck. The scope of scientific context and the way in which the author weaves together various players is both witty and insightful. However I couldn't help feeling that the author's journalistic prowess obscured and glossed over the actual science that Vertex and its counterparts were performing. As somebody who was hoping for a sort of Elegant Universe meets the pharmaceutical industry structured within a compelling narrative, I was disappointed. The narrative (specifically the sequence of causality dating back from the 1900s to the 1980s) is brilliant, but the science, the real red meat of a book like this, is largely absent.

Barry Werth's book provides a view of the high business and personal risks involved in developing drugs. $ 100 million and much more are sought after to research and develop a drug that only has a promise and could easily do nothing or even worse cause harm. That's the business risk and the leaders have to put on a confident front and do whatever or say whatever to make sure the money keeps coming in. On the personal side many extremely bright and confident PhD/MDs battle it out to be the one that makes the discovery or get credit for it. Quite often this battle is in the same company between friends and colleagues who may not in the end remain as such. Much of it reminds you of high school but then again we probably never do leave that stage as much as we like to think. The constant use of molecule and target names and descriptions can make a difficult read but there is much more soap opera than science. One finishes the book wondering how we have come so far in medicine/pharmaceuticals but I guess the same competitive spirit that can so often get in the way of progress also can make it go further and its tough to know when its more trouble than benefit.

I found this book and story to offer me a new perspective on biotech start-ups and drug development. The financing was also very interesting. Unfortunately, at several points in the book, I found the story dragging and belabored. Overall, it was a worthwhile read for anyone who would like more insight into today's world of biotech.

I purchased this book when I was hired at Vertex. I realize the book is a bit dated now but it is extremely interesting to read about the beginnings of the company and talking to colleagues who worked side by side with some of the people mentioned. The drive and ambition paired with world class talent and intelligence of all the scientists and businessmen is almost unbelievable and should make anyone more motivated to do and be more. I highly recommend giving it a read especially if you are in the biotech field.

This is a dense book to read. Heavy on science (with numerous different science disciplines) and the details of funding an early stage company, make the (presumed) exciting success story difficult to see clearly.

I read this book years ago, yet recall most of its details. It tells the tale of Josh Boger who came out of Harvard to start Vertex Pharmaceuticals, taking you in a captivating fashion through every delicate step from inception to maturity of this company in its quest for the big drug score.Having spent almost 18 years in this industry as a scientist and entrepreneur myself I can testify to its accurate portrayl of what it is like to start a typical therapeutic biotech. This book provides unique incite into the world of start-up biotechs and the risks that come with them. It even manages to scuttle through the many interesting dynamics of biotech personalities where primadonna scientific wiz kids meet bottom line suits with calculators and some hybridize into a combination of the two.If you are a potential investor, wish to work in this industry, or already do or even a patient wondering why your treatment/cure is not yet on market and want to understand more about the economics of biotechnology and drug discovery and development from the ground up, this is a must read. It will edify you and entertain you at the same time and you will end up rooting for Josh along the way.

An insightful book into the rise and fall of a new pharceutical start-up. What fascinates me is the narrative as well as the emotions, motives and Drivers of each individual behind the sciences.

This book is bloody brilliant. Follows Joshua Boger and crew as they take Vertex from an idea to a working pharmaceutical company. Along the way it outlines the history of several others outside the company and how their work influenced the projects chosen within the company. The writing is clear and one is left with a palpable sense of excitement for both the science and the biotech industry in general.

King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa, by Adam Hochschild

Amazon.com Review

King Leopold of Belgium, writes historian Adam Hochschild in this grim history, did not much care for his native land or his subjects, all of which he dismissed as "small country, small people." Even so, he searched the globe to find a colony for Belgium, frantic that the scramble of other European powers for overseas dominions in Africa and Asia would leave nothing for himself or his people. When he eventually found a suitable location in what would become the Belgian Congo, later known as Zaire and now simply as Congo, Leopold set about establishing a rule of terror that would culminate in the deaths of 4 to 8 million indigenous people, "a death toll," Hochschild writes, "of Holocaust dimensions." Those who survived went to work mining ore or harvesting rubber, yielding a fortune for the Belgian king, who salted away billions of dollars in hidden bank accounts throughout the world. Hochschild's fine book of historical inquiry, which draws heavily on eyewitness accounts of the colonialists' savagery, brings this little-studied episode in European and African history into new light. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly

Hochschild's superb, engrossing chronicle focuses on one of the great, horrifying and nearly forgotten crimes of the century: greedy Belgian King Leopold II's rape of the Congo, the vast colony he seized as his private fiefdom in 1885. Until 1909, he used his mercenary army to force slaves into mines and rubber plantations, burn villages, mete out sadistic punishments, including dismemberment, and committ mass murder. The hero of Hochschild's highly personal, even gossipy narrative is Liverpool shipping agent Edmund Morel, who, having stumbled on evidence of Leopold's atrocities, became an investigative journalist and launched an international Congo reform movement with support from Mark Twain, Booker T. Washington and Arthur Conan Doyle. Other pivotal figures include Joseph Conrad, whose disgust with Leopold's "civilizing mission" led to Heart of Darkness; and black American journalist George Washington Williams, who wrote the first systematic indictment of Leopold's colonial regime in 1890. Hochschild (The Unquiet Ghost) documents the machinations of Leopold, who won over President Chester A. Arthur and bribed a U.S. senator to derail Congo protest resolutions. He also draws provocative parallels between Leopold's predatory one-man rule and the strongarm tactics of Mobuto Sese Seko, who ruled the successor state of Zaire. But most of all it is a story of the bestiality of one challenged by the heroism of many in an increasingly democratic world. 30 illustrations. Agent: Georges Borchardt. Well this is an impressive book, I'm sure there are numerous really good reviews so I'll add something that might be a new observation, reading about British (and Irish) Counsel Roger Casement it reminded me that I read about him before and I looked up and found the story in Charles Mann book 1493 uncovering the new world Columbus created. It's always a thrill to find like a intellectual Easter egg especially if it's unexpected. One of the strengths of this book was how it introduced us to so many persons that are little noticed by history but had large impacts on the world, they came together to fight against one of the great crimes of the day King Leopold's rape and murderous rule of the Congo, they were rather successful over time although the guilty as is almost always the case in these types of crimes went largely unpunished accept for how they are view in history. Reverend William Sheppard sounds like an amazing man, so too with E. D. Morel, if it wasn't for this book I would know nothing of their stories. The difficulty of conducting this research when the main principals did everything they could to destroy the cover over there deeds, the remoteness of the area and the time period, makes it a miracle that this book could be written at all. Very glad I read it I've created a new shelf called Excellent History books just for books like this although their can't be many such books that reach this depth and understanding, it will always stand out in that shelf as a must read history book.

So I don't usually do leave reviews of books but I had to this time. I bought this books about 8 Pontus ago but I read the last few weeks only and I think it was the perfect timing with what is going on in my life right now as I'm making big choices concerning my future right now. If I didn't read this book right I probably would have missed on what might just be my life goal and something I plan on focusing for a good part of my life once I get more ready for it. I know this is not much of a book review as of now but I just wanted to show how much the story of my people have affected me and how I really want to do something about all the suffering that have been going and keeps on happening now. I myself grew up in Kinshasa, my dad was an army colonel who fought against Mobutu in the 90's and had to flee the country for a few years because of that. This year (2017) I'm about tombe 18 and I surprised that it's only now that I get to know the story of my people and what that so-called King Léopold II have done. Throughout my read I came to decide that one day I want to be a change in my countries history too, a positive change, I want to be the African voice to change the Congo and make it one of the great countries. I know I sound a little too exited now and kind of dreaming but I'm still a kid so I guess it's okay right? One day hopefully once I do start making a change someone finds this "review" and call me out on it.

I bought this book on a whim while on vacation because it was a Kindle Daily Deal, and wound up finishing it in just three days. I have no real background in Africa, Belgium, or colonialism, but Hochschild does a phenomenal job of weaving together a compelling story that brings a forgotten and disgraceful era to life. The story is just incredible. Chronologically, Hochschild does a great job at tying together a complex story over decades and even centuries, beginning with tale of the European discovery of the Congo river and then honing in on Leopold's obsession with colonial expansion and the Congo specifically. He describes the casual brutality of Leopold's regime extremely effectively before skillfully introducing the figures in the movement that rose up to make the world aware of what was happening in Africa. Along the way, the author does a great job of putting the events into historical context and addressing likely counterarguments made be pro-Leopold sources (e.g. why there was outrage about the Congo specifically despite equally brutal colonial regimes elsewhere in Africa, the pre-existence of continental African slavery, etc). Hochschild does a great job of developing characters and presents a mountain of irrefutable evidence to back up his main arguments, all of which is done in an extremely engaging manner. The author's epilogue, written 10 years after the initial publication, is also even handed and insightful. If I have any complaint with the book, it's that the author sometimes makes leaps of judgement in the narrative that aren't necessary, especially when it comes to speculating whether certain characters in the story previously l crossed paths or allowed specific people/events to privately influence their decisions. The story is compelling enough without these speculations. He also (rightfully) demonizes Leopold and other figures in the regime, but spends less time characterizing anti-colonial figures whose backgrounds and personal lives are shady at best. While certain players are demonstrably more despicable than others, I felt that Hochschild could have been a little more even handed in describing the faults of his protagonists at times, if for nothing else than to appear more impartial as a narrator and derail his critics.Overall, the book is outstanding and I would recommend it to anybody looking for a fast paced story, context about the European scramble for Africa, or insight as to how Africa developed through the 20th century.

Five Fundamentals: Steve Elkington Reveals the Secrets of the Best Swing in Golf, by Steve Elkington

Amazon.com Review

Ask any foursome of professional golfers who possesses the most sound swing on tour, and the response will be a gimme: Australian Steve Elkington. In Fundamentals, the PGA champ tees up his secrets, breaking down the essentials into pretty much the same pentathlon--grip, set-up, backswing, downswing, and tempo--as the great Ben Hogan did in his '50s classic, Five Lessons. Elkington's style is anecdotal, personal, conversational, and friendly; he talks you through his methods and thinking, with an emphasis on getting things right from the start rather than fixing faults acquired along the way. Throughout, he offers particular tips for advanced players, and he ends with useful advice on equipment, a section geared specifically to shoring up the short game, and an excellent series of exercises geared to keep golfing muscles loose and limber. Where Five Fundamentals really scores is in its ability to show as well as tell. It is peppered with helpful still photographs. Better yet, the top and bottom corners of the pages use the old flicker technique; flip them quickly and you'll be able to see Elk's sweet swing in action whacking a driver, a six-iron, and a wedge from the sand. In his hands, it looks so easy; the challenge is making yours look the same. --Jeff Silverman

tched PGA champion Steve Elkington play golf, you know what the perfect swing looks like in action: an elegant, apparently effortless stroke with stunningly accurate force. Now in this instructive book, Elkington shares the techniques and strategies behind that trademark swing, which his colleagues have named Best on Tour five years running. The secret is mastering the Five Fundamentals--the grip, the setup, the backswing, the downswing, and tempo.

"My aim is to provide a benchmark, a basis on which any player can build his own, authentic swing," Elkington writes. "I won't discuss faults or fixes. Golf is a series of linked fundamentals; let's eliminate your faults from the moment you pick up the club."

Applying the "flicker" or "flip book" technique in swing sequences with the driver, six-iron, and sand wedge, Five Fundamentals shows the rhythm and balance of Elkington's motion better than any still photograph could convey. Combining t

This is just a so,so book on golf. I was disappointed in it because I have watched Elkington on "in the Dirt" videos and he is very knowledgeable and very insightful about he golf swing. This just didn't compare.

Boght the book bunMr. Elkington cause I caddied once for him in the dutch open as a kid... Way before he became a world clas golfer! Hope it is an interesting read.

just as described quickly shipped

Like most golf books, you learn next to nothing. Elkington has one of the great swings of all time but it's unlikely you'll mimic it after reading his book. Poor quality photos.

Possessing one of the simpliest and classically crafted golf swings of any professional, Steve Elkington makes the vision come to life with excellent practical instruction accompanied by wonderful photographs. The format is basically the same as the Hogan classic. Starting with grip, and proceeding to downswing and follow-through, Elkington's interpretation is fresh and better explained than Hogan's. The drawings in the Hogan book are still classic and in Elkington's book are replaced by great photographs. Read the section on the grip and what to do with the thumbs, I'm sure you'll find that tip alone is something you haven't heard and well worth the price. This book belongs in every comprehensive golf library.

Steve Elkington provides all that is needed as a foundation for an effective and efficient golf swing. I have read many instuctional books which(unfortunately) present an overabundance of techniques or concepts ... so much that they lose their focus on what is being presented as the key concepts or fundamentals for an effective swing. Elkington has narrowed these key points to 5. And, from early personal experience, these 5 keys or fundamentals are "right on". Of course, they can't be learned or ingrained overnight. Patience will be required, but Steve Elkington is "proof-positive" that they are effective.

I found this book enlightening, particularly with regard to the section on transition. I have squandered years trying to figure out how to get from backswing to forward swing and this book finally allowed the "light to go off." His explanation on lowering and then raising the shoulder to initiate swings for the short game and putting are ridiculously simple. Having said that, I must say that it is a joke that the binding of this book literally disintegrates with use. I have bought 2 books thinking that the first one was just a fluke but, unfortunately both fell apart in my hands. Shame on Ballantine Books for allowing such shoddy workmanship.

Steve Elkington is not only a marvelous golfer but he is an accomplished horticulturist and a great family man. His approach to the golf game is one of extreme intelligence. He can improve a golfer's game tremendously if they follow his advice on the fundamentals outlined in this book. I only wish I had read this book 40 years ago! Now he needs to write a book on "course management".

these golden books are good because they are based on the cartoon stories. I first allowed my child to watch the movies but then was advised the kids shouldn't touch any ipad or tablet products, so i just lied to my child the ipad is dead and start giving her these books to read. She actually enjoys it even she doesn't understand English at all. We are Asian and speak foreign language at home and the kid is just 2.5 yr old before going day care. i will buy a lot more of these books for my kid

Book came on time and as described. The book itself was a little too long for a 1 1/2 year old toddler. I could not keep her attention, I got it for her before she watched the Zootopia movie. She liked looking at the animals and the colors but got bored after a minute. I'll keep the book for now and try to bring it back out for story time in another 6months or so.

Whats not to love about these books. I bought this for my 2 year old daughter and can't wait to read these to her. I remember these books when I was little. I wish I still had these books from when i was a little girl as it would be awesome to show my daughter look mommy had these books at your age too.Great price and great quality.

The child loved the book and the stuffed animals that go with book, thank you Amazon for having in stock and delivering so quickly.

Purchased as a "card" for a baby shower and wrote a message in the cover. Absolutely adorable. Great summary story of the movie. Great addition to the little golden books

I read this to my 5-year-old before going to see the movie in hopes that it would prepare her. While it does give the basic story it glosses over some (not all) of the scarier parts, so there were some moments in the movie theater where we were caught off guard. I find that this is typical of Little Golden Book adaptations so it was not a shock. My daughter still requests this story multiple time a week and based on that alone I'd say this is definitely worth buying.

It's ok, but there are certain points in the book that unnecessarily don't match up to the movie. Still a good and easy read for kids.

Perfect gift for someone special! It arrived promptly and great condition! Thank you!

"Clojure for the Brave and True" is one of the best books, on any topic, to come out in the last 350 years. This book is intended for folks who have already dabbled in Ruby or Javascript or something, and are ready for the next level, which is, of course, Clojure! It is punchy, relevant, well-written, and mercifully unbombastic. It is earthy, but it is lofty too. It is totally incomplete, thank goodness; you won't use it as a reference. But it should be good for "cracking the nut". The examples are brisk and plentiful, and except for the odd turn-of-a-page, they never exceed your field of vision (which is a great strength of Clojure). Some may think "for the brave and true" is just whimsy, but I believe the publisher's lawyers insisted on it. This book is not for dummies. Your curiosity, your high standards, and your impatience to start attacking real projects will be rewarded. The book frequently tosses out train-of-thought insights, invaluable clues to a "Clojure way" of making work easy.In the same vein as recommending chopsticks for Chinese food, the chapter about Emacs gets you into live REPL coding using traditional Lisp power tools for "structural editing" (time- and sanity-saving acrobatics with parentheses). But you can skip Emacs if you want; the rest of the book does not depend on it.The zany, off-hand tone sags toward the end, as though the author had had to be tranquilized before the book was finished and his step-mother took over. But this does not detract materially. She was almost as brave, and almost as true, just less flamboyant."Clojure for the Brave and True" gives you the lay of the land, with no claim of completeness. That is as it should be. It is strong on the principles, so you might continue learning in any way you want. A good next book would be Emerick, Carper & Grand's "Clojure Programming", which is even more meticulously principled, also very well written, and useful not only to finish coming up to speed but also as a reference work.

update: 2016-01-04: just finished chapter 6 "Organizing Your Project: A Librarian’s Tale". So far so good (fyi, I'm not working through this full time, so don't read too much into the tempo of my updates). Had some fiddle with the svg to get it to render on my ubuntu vm, but it got there. The most surprising thing was the use of -> and ->> (Thread First & Thread Last macros, respectively), which I had to do a little digging on to understand as I didn't see where it was covered in the text... I would have preferred to see the example code done "long-form way". But so far so good, I'm enjoying the read.Chapter 5 "Functional Programming" was both enjoyable and helpful, and the game example was pleasantly educational. I ended up manually keying large parts of the game function, just to get practice debugging and executing each bit and coding some unit tests to help me understand what it does. I also found the "assert" function on my own and coded up some tests in my clj file (not covered in the book, but figured I'd mention that here for anyone who is a fan of test driven development to consider): example...(defn row-num "Returns row number the position belongs to: row : positions 1 : 1 2 : 2 3 3 : 4 5 7" [pos] (inc (count (take-while #(> pos %) tri)))); tests... ; row# : positions...(assert (= 1 (row-num 1))) ; 1 : 1(assert (= 3 (row-num 5))) ; 2 : 2 3(assert (= 4 (row-num 10))) ; 3 : 4 5 6(assert (= 5 (row-num 15))) ; 4 : 7 8 9 10(assert (= 6 (row-num 16))) ; 5 : 11 12 13 14 15; tests on pos#'s 10, 15 & 16 ; 6 : 16 17 18 19 20 21; are intended to catch boundary conditions (spans rows 4, 5 & 6).(println "TESTS OK: row-num")I also ended up weaving "println"s and "let"s into the various functions to help me understand what they do. Makes the functions much more verbose, but helpful for my head to "see" what is going on in the inside.example:(defn connect "Form a mutual connection between two positions" [ board max-pos pos neighbor destination ] (do (if trace (println "\n---- connect: max-pos=" max-pos ", pos=" pos ", neighbor=" neighbor ", destination=" destination)) (if (<= destination max-pos) (let [ result (reduce (fn [new-board [p1 p2]] (do (if trace (do (println "reduce.new-board" new-board) (println "reduce.p1" p1) (println "reduce.p2" p2))) (assoc-in new-board [p1 :connections p2] neighbor))) board  (do (if trace (do (println "reduce.new-board" new-board) (println "reduce.p1" p1) (println "reduce.p2" p2))) (assoc-in new-board [p1 :connections p2] neighbor))) board )] (if trace (println "\nresult=" result)) result) board)))( let [ c (connect {} 15 1 2 4)]; expected: {1 {:connections {4 2}, 4 {:connections {1 2}} (assert (= 2 (count c))) ; top level keys, 1 & 4. (assert (contains? c 1)) (assert (contains? (get c 1) :connections)) (assert (contains? (get (get c 1) :connections) 4)) (assert (= 2 (get (get (get c 1) :connections) 4))) (assert (contains? c 4)) (assert (contains? (get c 4) :connections)) (assert (contains? (get (get c 4) :connections) 1)) (assert (= 2 (get (get (get c 4) :connections) 1))) (println "TESTS OK: connects"))Chapters 4 "Core Functions in Depth" was interesting, I will be re-reading this again after the sequences and lazy evaluation has some time to sink in... this feels like it will be a big (albeit productive) change in my programmer's world-view. I especially enjoyed the smaller examples, they were thought provoking. For example: "If you want an exercise that will really blow your hair back, try implementing map using reduce, and then do the same for filter and some after you read about them later in this chapter."Chapter 3 "Do Things: A Clojure Crash Course" had a good temp; the 'hobbit violence' example actually helped me think through more traditional data structures and "clojure style".update: 2015-11-27: after driving emacs for a while, it reminds me of a much smarter notepad, while I miss the "surgical precision" that I can navigate with in vi, I can see making emacs my clojure ide.Love it! Life-long vi user here making the transition to emacs as part of the Clojure learning curve, and I found the online "Chapter 2 How to Use Emacs, an Excellent Clojure Editor". I bought the paperback version just now because Chapter 2 is simply That Awesome.Thank you, good sir, for making what looked like a steep learning curve seem very manageable. My favorite quote thus far:"Emacs was invented in, like, 1802 or something, so it uses terminology slightly different from what you’re used to. What you would normally refer to as a window, Emacs calls a frame..."I'm just not used to laughing that hard when reading technical books :-)Seriously, the author has put a LOT of energy and thought into how to boil down, package and guide the reader through a complex landscape and I'm impressed with how artfully they do it. I will update when I reach the end.

This is one of my favorite computer books. I read it cover to cover. It's a great introduction Lisp and Clojure. Someone with limited programming experience could pick up this book and get an understanding of functional programming. The examples scenarios involve super heros and vampires, which might seem odd at times, but that's what makes it fun, as opposed to a dry HTTP request pressing example. I'll tell you, some of the other Clojure books are quite boring to read. The original artwork in Brave and True is enjoyable.Chapter 7, on macros and the Clojure reader/evaluator, WOW! This is where you get your mind blown when you understand how you can use code to generate code. This is something you'll never have seen if you come from Ruby, Python, JavaScript world. There are a bunch of diagrams that explain how the Clojure reader and evaluator works. I would recommend "Mastering Clojure Macros" book for in depth study of macros.I would recommend skipping the chapter on emacs if you're not a regular emacs user. Leaning Clojure and emacs at the same time is too much effort. Use your favorite editor then join the church of emacs later.Get this book if you're learning Clojure.

Well written, funny and loaded with useful Clojure content. The whole contents of the book are on Daniel's website. I read enough online to decide that I liked his style and wanted a hard-copy of the book. I'm glad I did.

Great book for learning Clojure. I looked at, and have a read a few others, but this is my favorite intro book.
