This book packs an impressive amount of information in a compact and light package. A typical visitor to the region should be able to identify most of what he sees with this book. Inter alia, each species account has a nice size range map, a section on how to differentiate similar species, one or two photos, diagrams showing tracks and the size of the animal compared to a human, habitat, behavior, food, detailed measurements, etc. There is also a useful collection of photos to facilitate dung identification.There are a few drawbacks, however. Some of these are to be expected in any compact guide, though others could have been easily remedied:- Most species are represented with a single photograph, though in a few cases there are two photographs, usually when sexes differ, as in antelopes where females usually have no horns. A single photograph can only show one side of an animal and obviously can't show individual variation. In some cases the photographs do not show key features, e.g. photograph of a Dwarf Mongoose does not show its tail even though the text indicates differences in the tail are important to distinguishing it from Slender Mongoose.- Only two species can be viewed at once; so you have to flip between pages in many cases to compare similar species.- There's no way to assess the relative sizes of the animals from the photos (though the diagrams at the bottom comparing size to a human do allow you to infer the differences)- There is no list of species covered in the table of contents; so to find a particular species you either have to flip through the book or check the index.- There is no discussion of mammal taxonomy, nor an explanation of how the species are ordered in the book. They are simply lumped into various categories such as primates, zebras, rhinoceros, antelope, carnivores, etc.- The text is fairly dry- I've noted a few species that a visitor to South Africa might easily encounter that are not included in the guide. These include Red Bush Squirrel, Humpback Whale, Slogget's Vlei (Ice) Rat, and Peters' Epauletted Fruit Bat. (The last is actually mentioned several times in the discussion of Wahlberg's Epauletted Fruit Bat, but there is no discussion of how to distinguish the two, and Peters is not listed in the index even though it is referenced.)- Easiest way I've found to differentiate African Civet from the similar looking Genets is that the former has a dark facial mask (like a No. Am. raccoon). But this is not mentioned in the text--it just says Genets are smaller with longer tail and shorter legs.

It's merely a digitized version of the paper edition.The list of animal names eg, has no hyperlinks. Not easy to jump through the book quickly in order to check if you got the name of a spotted animal right.The dung identififaction and track comparison are very handy and one of the reasons i bought this book. Used it a lot.

This review originally appeared on bostonbiblegeeks.wordpress.com on 1/27/10.Special thanks to Robert of Yale University Press for a review copy (unsolicited!) of this book.For many who have spent much time digging into the Wisdom Literature of the Bible, Michael V Fox will probably need no introduction. He has written numerous books on the subject, including this commentary's predecessor on Proverbs 1-9. I will not be including any thoughts on that particular commentary; the following thoughts are restricted solely to Proverbs 10-31.The Anchor Bible Commentary on Proverbs 10-31 contains a detailed study of the Hebrew text (transliterated, which means it takes me twice as long to read it as it would if it were in Hebrew) and issues dealing with the book of Proverbs. He sees the four collections in chapters 10-29 as dating to the 8th-7th centuries BC, with the 4 units in chapters 30-31 added later (date uncertain). The inclusion of so many proverbs involving a king and his court makes it most likely these collections come from the monarchy period (whereas he takes Qoheleth and Ben Sira later, since their view of kingship is much more negative).Fox not only comments on the text, but also offers some ancient near eastern parallels. In his comments on the well known proverb of 25:21-22 ("you will heap coals on his head"), Fox notes, "Schadenfruede angers God" and "mercy is the best revenge." He does not try to nail down a practice of heaping literal coals on someone's head, instead showing that the metaphor is meant simply to show the pain of humiliation. He also goes on to give similar examples of this proverb in Egyptian and Babylonian literature.At points, Fox goes beyond his own comments and historical background. For instance, Fox includes 30 pages of discussion of "The Woman of Strength" in 31:10-31, including not only his own comments and overview of potential historical settings, but a short survey of the history of interpretation, a feature he helpfully includes throughout the commentary.After his commentary portion, Fox has attached four essays. The first, "The Growth of Wisdom," attempts to trace the differences in the understanding of wisdom in the various stages of Proverbs' composition. In "Ethics" Fox finds similarities between Proverbs and the Socratic ("the sages of Proverbs, like Socrates, believed that ignorance alone is the problem and wisdom alone the solution"). In the essay "Revelation" Fox attempts to show that revelation in Proverbs is not "verbal" (i.e., from the Torah) but Proverbs "treats the power of the human mind as adequate to the attainment of all sorts of knowledge." He follows this with "Knowledge," where he argues that Wisdom epistemology is not empiricism, but argues for a "coherence theory of truth." I would imagine that someone trained in philosophy would do a better job than I in analyzing much of what is contained in these essays, but I still found them interesting to read.There are, naturally, areas of potential disagreement for those interested in studying Proverbs more deeply, particularly if you are an evangelical. Fox has little interest in theological synthesis or application. This should be of no surprise, considering he once wrote "faith-based study has no place in academic scholarship." Naturally I stand in sharp disagreement here.Fox also bucks the trend of seeing smaller collections within the larger collection of the book. Most proverbs are essentially to stand on their own, though of course there may be a couple verses (in our Bibles) that are grouped together. So, where Garrett sees a chiastic structure in 14:8-15, Fox sees nothing of the sort. Proverbs may be paired together (25:16-17), or even clustered according to themes (divine control in 16:1-9), but they are never organized in longer structures. I'm not inclined to agree with Fox here, though I admit finding larger structures can owe itself to the creativity of the scholar more than anything else. Wouldn't the book of Proverbs, being a collection of proverbs, gather together smaller collections thay may already have been grouped in a chiasm? After all, chiasms are all over the Hebrew Bible, it would seem odd that they wouldn't be found in Proverbs.All in all, Fox is a very good scholar of Wisdom literature, and thus has written a very helpful, scholarly work on Proverbs. Scholars will, of course, get the most use out of it, but I'd venture to say that it would serve well preachers and teachers, too. It will probably not be the only commentary you'll want to consult, but it is certainly worth having by your side.

I like this book. I'm a mom to 4 kids, ages 11, 9, 6, and 3. I want to read the Bible with my kids. I imagine reading the Bible with them. Sometimes, I even HAVE read it with them--but I sometimes I haven't known where to start, or what to talk about once we read it. Or, I'm so tired that I can't even pick out a passage. That's where this book is a great help.Sarah M. Wells has curated some great, thought-provoking passages (largely well-known stories), woven them together in a thoughtful thematic order, provided some helpful context to the ideas, given gentle but not insipid discussion questions, and added some actually do-able family activities based on the themes. If a family were to actually use this book, they would gain a good deal of wisdom, a sense of the richness of the scripture, and be encouraged to feel comfortable holding the Word in their hands, asking questions together, and exploring God's character together.Wells has also managed to avoid some of the more annoying features of Christian books. There's not a bunch of moralizing, not a bunch of telling your young people how to be "good," not a bunch of obviously sectarian points so that only a narrow set of people could be comfortable using it, not a bunch of neatly explaining or ignoring things that might be troubling. There's also not a lot of Christian cliche in here, which I personally find refreshing. It's a book that respects the intellect and the ability of its readers while providing some helpful assistance to just find a place to get going in family Bible study. I will be continuing to read it with my people, and would give it as a gift. Definitely recommend.

I found this travel guide to be extremely convenient and informative for sightseeing around Beijing. For being a small book (it fit in my jean's back pocket), this book was packed with details and facts about the sights in the city. It was well organized so you were able to flip it open to a section about the neighborhood you were walking around in and easily find information about the area around you.The book also had plenty of "advice" organized as top 10 lists. One example was the "Top 10 Things to Avoid" list that actually listed out a couple of scams that I actually witnessed on my trip.The only setback with this book was the lack of Chinese translations in it. The language barrier in Beijing can be larger than the Great Wall at times especially when you are trying to communicate with taxi drivers or subway attendants on where you want to go. Usually, you need to plan out your day trip before you leave your hotel and ask your hotel manager to write, in Mandarin, where you want to go on a piece of paper that you would be able to show a taxi driver. A simple Mandarin translation for the place you want to go that you could point at next to titles within the book would have been IMMENSELY helpful and aided in more spontaneous day trips.All around great travel guide.

I'm a fan of the Top 10 series of books. They give you a good place to start for seeing the highlights of a city. I've been to Beijing a few times, and the city is so huge and complex that you need a good place to start if you only have a few days. Even if you're taking a guided tour, these books are still helpful because you'll be overwhelmed at places like the Forbidden City and want to make sure you are aware of the highlights before you step foot in it.The strongpoint of this book is the size. They practically live in my pocket when traveling and I use them for quick reference and are filled with post-it notes from research. The maps are decent for navigation when wandering around aimlessly.I've used DK Top 10 books in 20+ cities on 6 continents and am comfortable with them. They won't give you indepth city tips, but will give you a brief overview with lots of colorful photos and nice diagrams. Certainly the more research you do, the better and that includes other books. But if you want to get started and were *only* doing Beijing and needed a Top 10 book, the DK Top 10 Beijing is a great place to start.

The places are easy to find, the maps are great. The info is helpful. I just wish it had a little more history behind the memorials. I guess that's what you get if you buy the larger, fatter travel books. Overall it was a good book. I always, always use Top 10 or Day by day and I was not dissapointed with this one. Just wish i had more history when I got to the monuments. Also the area restaurants could use a little more description. I would recommend this book to anyone. I went to Beijing for 4.5 days. Left to Xi'an for one night. Totally worth it.

Best part was the restaurants, but second best was the excursions at the end of the book. Go to Shidu, it's like Yosemite park. And go see the kite shop! Hand painted and unbelievable. King of Netherlands goes there since he collects kites.

highly recommend this easy to use and well organized book - great to take with you throughout the day.

We were able to take advantage of a lot of the places that the guide had suggested and were exactly what we were expecting.
