Just took the GKT for the 1st time & happy to report that I passed all 3 areas - just awaiting my essay report. While this study guide did help - particularly for the English portion, it was lacking overall. The English section is much better than the math. The math section in the book is very complex- much more so than it needs to be. The pre-tests for math were not reflective of the actual GKT. The book focuses way too much on complex problems- particularly in geometry- none of that was on the test. The test is mostly made up of word problems where you must apply formulas- things like speed = distance/time.....geometry is basic - finding area in practical situations. There are much, much better study guides out there. Thankfully, I found another study guide in time - had I not, I don’t believe this book would have equipped me with the correct skills needed to pass the exam.For the English portion- the practice test is fine....but if it is math you are looking for - look elsewhere!
This guide helped me so much. Without it, I would have been completely lost. I haven't done Math or English Language Skills in over 25 years. This book got me caught up on algebra, geometry, factoring, and statistics. I was able to get through the book in a week, a week completely devoted to nothing but studying this guide. My advice to anyone preparing for the FTCE is to give yourself at least one month, especially if your mathematics skills are rusty.
This is a terrific study guide for the FTCE. The fact that this guide is formatted for the most current test gives me confidence in the material contained inside. The guide is well organized and information is easy to find, allowing study time to be used for efficiently. Having access to two full practice tests is a big plus. I can see the types of questions that I'm likely to encounter as well as concepts and terms to focus on. The answer key was great for explaining the reasoning behind each correct answer, so understanding the material is simple. The guide makes use of charts, tables, graphs and other illustrations to further several points and greatly assist visual learners. I'd definitely recommend this study guide to others and I give it a 5 stars.
I really like how calming the book is. I'm not a test taker and I have to admit many tears have been shed over studying for this test. This book seems to expect it and helps calm the nerves. I have not finished reading the book, but I do wish it involved some sort of calming tips for studying and test taking. I'm thrilled with it so far.
This book is very helpful. I give it five star. I was not aware of what the test would be like since I am a trained teacher from the Caribbean. However, it explains in detail what to expect and is a guide to what should be known. Also it gives step by step examples. This book is quite insightful. I am hoping I will pass this test.
So pleased with this test prep book. I used the FTCE Elementary Education K-6 one previously and passed all 4 sections the first time. When it came time to study for the GK, I bought this right away. I like that there are online "extras", including flashcards you can print. This is also one of the only books that has a section on the Essay.
Dissapointed in this book. There are so many typos which really hinders studying especially for math. There are mistakes in the answer key, explanation for a question answer but they put it with the wrong question number. Very hard to know if you are scoring properly.
Review by Teacher Education student for Warner University Library - As a recent test participant (FTCE General Knowledge Test in June of this year 2018) I can say, with some degree of validity, that the materials covered in this study guide are reflective of the types of skills that are being tested in the four sections of the FTCE GK Test. I have also read other guides as well and attended a General Knowledge Boot Camp and the materials that I have reviewed from those other sources are similar to that of the Cirrus Test Prep for the FTCE General Knowledge Test.The differences that make this particular study guide stand out more from the other resources is in the lay out, presentation, and how each skill set is being introduced, broken into parts, and reviewed in a practice test. The use of tables, shaded lines, and boxes for areas such as helpful hints, sample questions, and visual representations for modelling the skill set being addressed gives the user a sense of consistency in the patterns of how the subset and set of skills will unfold. The practice area is well defined as to how the correct answer was obtained, which helps to redirect the reader to the area to rework the skill.Use of bolding key terms within the set and subset of each skill group helps to focus the reader to the areas which need more specified detail and interest, but the text itself is direct to the point and easily addresses and explains the information; additionally, the visuals and tables are appropriate to the material and support the skills that are being introduced. I have personally found that some study guides for the FTCE GK Test either use too little or too many visuals alongside the text, and one of the things I feel is a strength for this particular study guide is that it has an adequate balance so it is both engaging learners as well as not overwhelming or distracting them during the study process.There are two areas that I feel this study guide did lack in, however. One is not offering a more in depth look at the General Knowledge Test. The introduction of this study guide does offer a glimpse of the test, but it is a simple overview. One of the workshops I attended offered a further view based on information that can be accessed from the FTCE website (blueprint of skills and competencies PDF available for each subtest within the GK) and having that information together in one study guide as well as a further expansion and explanation of this concept of looking at the test from a constructive angle could be very helpful to support the excellent information provided in the study guide itself. A breakdown of the number of questions per subsection/competency and the percentage needed to pass each section is helpful.The second area where I feel the guide is lacking is in a further explanation into some of the tricks that are common in these types of tests, that Pearson Vue are using in the test itself. I feel like addressing some of the common traits that can be found on these skill-based high-stakes tests. As well as testing tips, such as skipping and flagging questions, which though these are included in the YouTube from Stress to Success, that was referenced in the online resources portion of the book, would be helpful to have included in print for those verbal-linguistics based learners.Over all, this is an excellent resource that I am including in my personal repertoire to reattempt the Math portion of the General Knowledge Test, and I have already recommended it to fellow students who are in the teacher education program at my university.
